At Portobello Institute we share a common commitment to quality, a structured approach to learning and a focus on industry links as well as care for the individual learners.
Our academic team along with programme managers and teaching staff are the heart of the college who inspire and support our students on a daily basis and throughout their educational journey with us. To ensure full relevant support for every learner we have a programme manager in place for every department. All with significant experience within their sector we are delighted to show just some of our dedicated team.
Cathal has completed his BSc in Physical Therapy amongst several other qualifications in Sports Massage. Cathal runs his own private practice in Sports Therapy and successfully works with a number of University & Club teams.
Bernie has an extensive knowledge of special needs education and has been a lecturer in Portobello Institute since February 2018. Bernie is extremely conscientious, reliable and hard working and her students have been extremely successful under her tuition
Aisling comes with a wealth of knowledge across generating risk assessments, safety documentation including RAMS, accident investigation, identifying and implementing training needs. Aisling enjoys all aspects of tutoring, especially getting students to ask and think and talk about various situations and also supporting many who may not have been in formal education for years.
Karen is a past student of Portobello of both Montessori and Early Childhood Studies. Along with her mother, Karen is the co-owner of her own Montessori school and is a part-time tutor in Portobello.
Colette fully understands that special needs assistants are a vital part of full inclusion for children with special needs, within the primary school services or that of a special unit placement.
Catherine Cross has been a dedicated Complimentary Therapy tutor with Portobello Institute since 1999. She first trained in massage in the UK and has been working in the beauty industry for over twenty years she brings a wealth of experience to our students.
Zarah Doyle has worked in many areas of education and community settings since 2010, being passionate about the rights of people with autism.
Zena Egerton has completed her ECCE up to level 8 and has a Masters Degree in Child, Youth & Family Studies. She is currently undertaking a post grad diploma in further education
Helen completed a one-year course in childcare at Portobello Institute in the early 1990s with one of the first groups of childcare graduates and worked as a professional nanny for 5 ½ years. She also trained as a special needs assistant and over many years worked in main stream schools both primary and secondary and has worked as a tutor for the last number of years at Portobello Institute.
For Edwin, he really enjoys sharing experiences and scenarios from his extensive experience with students and understands the importance of real life scenarios in a classroom setting in really striking a chord to those listening and try to develop their skillset within FM.
From the first class taught Denise knew she had found what she loved and finds adults education so rewarding. “You meet so many different characters from different backgrounds looking to come in to a sector that I believe is such a beautiful place to work. We are privileged to spend a few years with these young people when they are in the biggest growth phase of their lives”.
Paul has over twenty years experience in health and fitness, focusing on exploring and understanding the relationship between diet, exercise and health. He has a MA in both Public Nutrition and in Exercise Physiology with numerous other fitness and sports qualifications.
Iryna worked as a tutor at Portobello before commencing her PM role. Now working in this role allows Iryna to combine her higher education background with a real passion for advancement of Early Childhood Care and Education.
Susan has a research track-record that includes publishing in high-ranking international scientific journals and has co-authored book chapters on sports performance. Susan’s main research area to date has focused on the development and validation of technologies for performance assessment.
Oliva Hamil has five years experience of working in the EY industry as well as over thirteen years of fostering children with special needs. She is qualified with a H-Dip in Early Childhood Care and Education and a MA in Child, Youth & Family.
Lindsay delivers a partnership approach to tutoring in Portobello Institute by exploring students’ expectations and learning objectives at the start of the SLTA course. She also endeavours to create a safe and welcoming environment that values opinions and welcomes discussion and questions in a small and enhanced group setting.
Debbie enjoys every term being a new challenge, in the learners, their different personalities and cultures and being part of their education journey starting at the very basics to graduates going on to work for exclusive makeup counters including MAC and Inglot.
Jacqueline Howley has has managed her own brand in buying and sales, category management and supply chain. Her experience spans across Homewares, Ladies Accessories, Grocery and Light Hardware and has over fifteen years experience.
Nicole understands first hand the challenges of starting a business in the fashion world, armed with a wealth of knowledge to pass onto students who may wish to begin a similar journey. A favourite part of tutoring for Nicole is seeing students’ piece together their designs to form a complete garment.
Aoife Kelly has been an Early Years tutor at Portobello Institute since 2006 and has significant experience working with children in various capacities since 1991. Aoife began her career as a Montessori teacher, so she understands the industry in depth. From there she went into special education working in both mainstream and special schools.
Fiona has been devoted over 22 years at Portobello Institute training beauty students through their education guiding and inspiring trainee students through their practical and theoretical skills. Fiona was the very first employee in the beauty department and helped set up the beauty department and is heavily involved in the department to this day. She teaches the trainee students to be well presented, articulate and capable beauty therapists with the ability to provide the necessary customer care and service required to ensure overall client satisfaction.
Joanne has over ten years experience in the Travel industry with various different travel agency roles throughout her career. She is very passionate about teaching and helping her students succeed in their studies.
Claudia is a highly qualified Physical Therapist and a specialist in Deep Tissue, Hot Stones, Indian massages and much more. Recently she received a Level 5 cert for Sports Injuries and Remedial Therapy in UCD.
Emma Manley is owner of fashion and accessories label, Manley, and co-founder of Bloss, an Irish Designer pop-up shop. She has plenty of experience in the fashion industry and is a respected name in fashion.
For Annemarie it’s about helping and supporting students to be successful and her commitment to seeing them through to a career in fashion. Her commitment to students is every present with ongoing correspondences from graduates having secured roles as buyers, merchandisers all over the globe.
Emma McAuley has worked in the beauty industry for 9 years, having been a Portobello student herself in 2010. Emma has managed a beauty salon for 3 years and has experience working with Bare Minerals, being trained in London for the company.
Bernie is a past pupil of Portobello with over seven years experience of working with both adults and children with intellectual disabilities and additional relevant training Physical Education Studies and English Language Teaching
Emer has been a qualified beauty therapist for sixteen years, teaching massage workshops and the ITEC skin and eye evening modules in Portobello Institute for two years.
Montessori changed Olga’s life and she has been tutoring the Montessori fulltime, part time, blended learning and Intensive courses with the Institute for over 20 years.
Emma has completed her BSc in Psychology and MSc in Sports Psychology and has worked in both mental health and sports domains. Emma also has a keen interest in performance analysis and the GAA.
Liz Mitchell has been dedicated to Special Needs Assisting as a discipline for the last 12 years and has spent many years as a tutor at Portobello Institute.
Portobello Institute has a student-centred focus at its core. For Colm this is important who feels very strongly that students deserve the support of their tutors and their college to help them achieve the best outcomes they can.
Maeve Nolan has worked in Portobello for almost twenty years with experience in managing her own Montessori school for fifteen years. Maeve wishes to aid her students in anyway she can, seeing their success being the most rewarding part of her job.
Joanne has been teaching in Portobello for fifteen years and is extremely passionate about customer service in the Travel and Tourism industry. She tutors in Tourism and Travel, Tour Operations, Airline Studies, Customer Service and Communications.
Mairéad lectures in People Management, Customer Service and Procurement modules of the BIFM and ILM Facilities Management Diploma at Portobello Institute and thrives working with learners to achieving their goals and assisting their progression within the FM and building services sector.
During his time at UL, Barry gained experience working in elite level rugby with the Munster academy and also runs a successful personal training business while being passionate about sports with particular interest and experience in swimming, cycling and rugby.
Fiona is currently completing her PhD via DCU in Exercise prescription for Cancer Survivors. Fiona has experience lecturing and tutoring at 3rd level in physiology and exercise physiology and is an avid Gaelic footballer.
John is a senior tutor who brings extensive years’ experience in lecturing at a number of third level Institutes. He teaches our students through extensive professional development in his subject domains.
Louise has worked in post-primary, primary and mainstream schools for many years and knows what is needed to be success as a Special Needs Assistant.
Gordon has years of experience in Sports Science, having worked with Ulster Rugby, Irish Rugby U20s, intercounty GAA and many more sports teams.
Nora Sweetnam has been working in Early Years for over twenty years, has taught English as a second language and is tutoring Montessori Education and Early Childhood Studies.
With over ten years experience in commercial design, styling and brand identity, Janet Takuz is well used to the challenges of the industry and is more than willing to share her knowledge with her students.
Alongside tutoring in Portobello Lorraine successfully runs her own salon in Kildare. Her approach to learning is a gentle yet assertive approach, fully believing in the college ethos that develops students into industry ready professionals at beginning of a career or indeed those upskilling along the way.
Makeup has always been a true passion for Marie Therese who always a hobby while working in the travel sector but on taking voluntary redundancy at the end of 2005 decided to pursue her real passion. Marie completed a makeup course and admits hasn’t looked back since with some sound advice that it's never too late to pursue your dreams.
