Meet the Team
At Portobello Institute we share a common commitment to quality, a structured approach to learning and a focus on industry links as well as care for the individual learners.
Our academic team along with programme managers and teaching staff are the heart of the college who inspire and support our students on a daily basis and throughout their educational journey with us. To ensure full relevant support for every learner we have a programme manager in place for every department. All with significant experience within their sector we are delighted to show just some of our dedicated team.
Colm’s education is significant with multiple qualifications including a Postgraduate Certificate in Third Level Teaching & Learning from DIT and a MSc Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology from Waterford IT. He has been tutoring for 11 years and joined the team at Portobello Institute in 2018.
Colm’s career took a completely new direction in 2003. After many years working in banking and IT, he returned to his love of sport and coaching and subsequently embarked on an academic journey to acquire and develop new skills in related areas (across physical therapy, teaching & learning and sport psychology).
His journey from employee to self-employed has been extremely challenging has taught him resilience and self-reliance but has also boosted belief in his own abilities. Also, his academic journey as a mature student has converted him into a life-long learner. These experiences have shaped Colm but have also given him a wealth of knowledge that helps him to relate well to students.
His favourite aspect of tutoring is de-mystifying the course material, breaking it down for students and watching their confidence and knowledge grow as they begin to believe that they can overcome the challenge they have set for themselves.
“I always tell my students that I empathise with them as I understand the challenge of balancing study and exams with other commitments. However, I don’t sympathise! After all, they have chosen to enrol. The workload goes with the territory”.
Portobello Institute has a student-centred focus at its core. For Colm this is important who feels very strongly that students deserve the support of their tutors and their college to help them achieve the best outcomes they can.
