Kate Walsh on her journey to Level 7
Since graduating from a degree in Communications, Kate’s career was primarily focused in the retail sector working right up to store management level. Upon realising that retail wasn’t where she wanted to be long term Kate began thinking about what she would really like to do. “I always wanted to work with young children and so began looking at preschool/Montessori training courses”.
“From online research through to speaking to people within the industry, Portobello Institute appeared to be one of the best and most highly recommended Montessori courses available. I also went to an open day and was able to discuss the different courses available one on one and all of my questions were answered”.
“I couldn't believe that in one year I would complete a QQI Level 6 Major Award in Childcare with Montessori and would be able to begin working right away and even have the option to open my own Montessori school if I wanted.”
Kate began her studies in 2016 and found the college to be “everything I hoped it would be and more”.
She admits that the course was intensive, and students need to be prepared to put a lot of time into the course but confirms it is very rewarding and huge support throughout the course.”
Students attend classes three days a week and complete work experience in a setting the additional two days. This practical approach to learning means that students have the hands on opportunity to put all content learned in class into real life practice.
“Work Experience is a huge part of the course and it really helps you to put the new skills you are learning into practice and prepares you for the real world when you will be working in the area.”
The Montessori method is very hands on and Kate feels students really got plenty of time to practice with the materials every day. “The class size was small and this was really good as everyone gets the same time with any opportunities to ask questions while discussing things in class.”
“I was so fortunate to be placed in a beautiful Montessori school near where I live. I absolutely loved the school and didn't want to leave when the course was over”. Kate was absolutely over the moon to be offered a job in the setting and feels her life has really changed in the past year and all for the better.
Since completing the QQI Montessori course, qualifying and landing her dream job in the perfect setting Kate has now also enrolled on the Level 7 degree at Portobello Institute commencing in October.
The future looks bright for Kate enrolling on the blended level 7 degree programme at Portobello Institute where she will study the core modules which fully equip her to implement effective practice with children and families within an early years setting.
