FM qualifications are no longer desirable, they are expected

Before committing to the course Mark originally came from a trade background, quoting for and managing various commercial, domestic and industrial contracts. When he started the course at Portobello Institute he was heavily involved in introducing a start-up CMMS and Facility Management Platform Programme.

For Mark, he felt that FM was a natural progression for him and choose the course for several reasons. “I work within the industry; I had trade knowledge, coupled with CMMS and contract management experience. I also had a manager that recognises potential, promotes succession and encouraged my application, which is very important”.

The course really helped with Mark with his progression as an FM and provided him with a more holistic view of the business. Relevant and recognised qualifications were also important, “I also wanted to gain a recognised qualification within the industry, which the course provided”.

Overall, the college experience for Mark was very positive across many aspects. “Having not experienced this environment previously, the prospect was a little daunting. However, the support received from Portobello Institute, and in particular Mairead Roche, the programme manager, was amazing. The tutors were also very accessible and willing to assist”.

Course content was extremely relevant with every module relating to daily challenges in FM. Key subjects include H&S, Risk Management, Procurement, Financial Management, Property and Asset Management, Development and Trends, Organisational and Facilities Management and People Management.

Mark understood the importance of these core requirements and the ability to manage all of these equally to become a successful facilities manager. “I employ and apply the learning’s from the course on a daily basis. Each module is relevant to everyday FM life”.

For Mark the college experience was fantastic. Highlights include “interacting with great tutors and meeting new people working in different types of environments was always very informative. Sharing experiences as to how different people deal with the same issues was very interesting and overall I learned a lot from this class interaction”.

Since finishing the course and gaining his qualification Mark has received a promotion and believes that completing the course was a strong contributory factor. “I would previously have been considered competent and very able, but a relevant sought after qualification, a BIFM diploma, is now ultimately expected regardless of how capable you are”.

Mark would absolutely recommend the course and “has recommended all IWFM courses offered by Portobello Institute to colleagues and contractors, as the perfect platform for progression within the FM industry”.

Mark admits that it was tough at times managing work, study and family demands but overall it was very enjoyable and worth the effort.

“This course has encouraged me to continue with my studies and I am now looking at other available courses would be most applicable to my current position and beyond”.

The future looks extremely bright for Mark and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
