Emma Nixon's journey to QQI Level 6 in Early Childhood Care

From as long as she could remember, Emma Nixon loved children and has always been a very happy as a stay at home mum to her 3 amazing children. “I never really thought I was good enough for college, however working with children in a playschool would be something I would love to do.”  Through a recommendation from her friend who had completed her studies with Portobello Institute Emma enrolled onto the QQI Level 6 Early Childhood Care and Education. “I had 8 modules to complete and it all seemed like a massive mountain to climb but I loved every minute of it.”

A well structured approach to learning in place for classes, submissions after completion of each module and work experience made the course very achievable.   “I will admit it was very tough at times. Trying to do assignments, work experience, looking after three children, be a wife and keep the home running was a challenge but with the ongoing help from the college and tutors and with each assignment I sent in and every module I completed it got easier and easier.”

Emma’s work experience took place in a local playschool with had a baby room, toddler room, Montessori and crèche. “I worked in all the different rooms at different times. I loved every minute of it. When it was time for me to finish up, they asked me would I stay on permanently and I of course, I said yes. I work in a great playschool, with the most adorable kiddies and a bunch of lovely girls.”

“Everything has just really fallen into place for me, and all my hard work had now paid off. I now work Monday to Friday 9am-Noon and I can still collect my kiddies from school afterwards. “

“My whole journey in college has been truly life changing. I have gained so much, and I can honestly say to anyone if you feel you want to go to college…. You can do it! That mountain is high and hard to climb but it is so worth it. I felt so proud on graduation day when I put on the cap and gown and got my first ever certificate. That certificate read Emma Nixon graduated with a Distinction.”

For Emma a key learning from the course is the importance and responsibility that individuals have as parents, teachers and caregivers and offers potential learners some great advice, “Follow your dreams and believe in yourself, you can be anything you want to be in this big world, just do it with a lot of love, empathy and compassion.”
