Elly shares her journey to her dream job as a trainee buyer.
I am passionate about the fashion industry and after graduating with a degree in International Business and French from TU Dublin, I decided to pursue a career in buying for the fashion industry. I secured a two-week internship with Primark’s buying department in Dublin, where colleagues encouraged me to sign up for a course in fashion buying and merchandising with the Portobello Institute, to kickstart my career in the industry.
I have found the 3-module course at Portobello to be very well structured, the theory is to the point and efficiently taught followed by interesting assignments which push you out of your comfort zone and help to put theories into context. The lecturers are extremely encouraging and open discussion is highly encouraged in the classes. The workload is demanding, but manageable given that the course is designed to suit people who are working full time.
During the course I applied for a full-time position with Primark and was called to interview. Anne Marie, the course coordinator, was an enormous help, from talking me through the interview process, giving me tips on answering typical questions and helping with structuring my presentation.
My application was successful and now I am working in my ideal job as a trainee buyer in Primark!
I would highly recommend the Portobello Institute course to anyone interested in pursuing a career path in Buying and Merchandising.
