Claire Byrne’s journey to Degree Level
Claire Byrne celebrated her dedication to study at our 2017 Graduation in Croke Park. Her love for being around children began when she was a teenager helping her mum who used to work in a crèche. “It really opened my eyes to working with children and also teaching them what I know.”
Claire chose the level 6 course in Montessori at Portobello Institute because she had been babysitting before going to college and really loved the children also wanted to work in a Montessori environment. She found the course through an online search. “I found the course on careers portal. Portobello Institute came straight up in the search and after some time exploring their website I was amazed at the small class sizes.”
“I always wanted to go to a small college as a big university just never appealed to me. I wanted the class to be small and for everyone to know each other and I knew Portobello was my answer.” Claire started her studies in Portobello Institute after completing her leaving cert with the QQI Level 6 in Montessori and Early Childhood Education and Care. Course highlights were “making materials, working with them and a dream of using them in a real classroom setting during my work placement”.
After completing the Level 6 Claire continued straight into doing her Level 8 BA Honours in Early Childhood Studies at Portobello Institute. Modules throughout the degree took Claire into a completely different mindset about childcare while showing a different path into how to work with different children and their families.
“I absolutely loved every single moment in Portobello and the support was fantastic from the staff and the tutors. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their guidance and support”. Overall Claire feels that her qualification to Level 8 has absolutely helped in her career. “My views and my mind have been broadened considerably because of what I have learned and I can give the children a better experience.”
Claire is currently working in a full day care setting. “In the mornings I am a Montessori teacher in a room with another girl and we have 17 children and I absolutely love what I am doing”.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the support from Portobello and all that I have learned". “I would, without a doubt recommend this course, it is the best decision I ever made to do my Level 6 and progress onto my Level 8 with Portobello Institute.”
