Aoife Brennan Speech & Language Therapy graduate story
Aoife Brennan completed her Health Service Skills with Speech and Language Therapy Assistant at Portobello Institute. For Aoife, speech and Language therapy had always been a career option she wished to pursue.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t get the points at Leaving Certificate, so I decided to take the scenic route and complete a science degree.” On completing her degree, Aoife was faced with the option to continue along a science path or to look at a change career and apply for a graduate programme.
Prior to applying for any graduate programmes, Aoife heard an advert on the radio advertising a speech and language assistant course at Portobello Institute and after further research decided to progress with the course.
“The course provided me with a good insight into both theory and practical work of an SLT. We were introduced to speech, language and swallowing disorders for both adult and paediatric caseloads and got experience in developing and creating session plans and goal setting.” Through other modules of study, the students engaged in inter-disciplinary education by having classes with nursing, occupational and physio therapy students which all proved very beneficial. The students gained vital experience in working as a team and by doing group activities.
“We had classes in anatomy, human growth and development and infection control which are all vital components of study for a health care professional. The work experience module was a great benefit, as I was able to obtain 100 hours experience in an acute hospital in Dublin, really gaining an insight into the role of a working speech and language assistant."
The main advantage of the course for Aoife was how many doors it opened up for her. “For all applications to the graduate programmes, I was required to write a personal statement outlining my experience to date and with a qualification from Portobello Institute, I was able to gain a large variety of volunteering roles with different client groups”.
Following on from the course, Aoife was accepted onto a Master’s programme for speech and language, which she has now successfully completed with a bright future ahead!
“Overall, I would absolutely recommend this course in Portobello Institute as a positive stepping stone for individuals who wish to pursue a career in Speech and Language Therapy.”
