The Travel department 2018 best bits
The beginning of the year is always an exciting time in the Travel and Tourism department at Portobello Institute and we began the year with a trip to the largest and most exciting exhibition in the Travel Industry calendar - The Holiday World Show in the RDS.
This trip is scheduled every year to give our students a first-hand view of industry trends; including holiday destinations and a range of holiday products from hundreds of travel companies, airlines, hotels and worldwide tourism organisations.
Students had a real opportunity to network with Industry professionals and also see the wide range of career choices available to graduates in this exciting industry. It also gives them great research material for tehir individual portfolios of work where they have to research and design their own Package Tour to a Worldwide destination.
St Patrick’s Festival was the next big highlight on the calendar and with our city centre location in Dublin 1 we are right at the heart of multiple events that take place in the capital city to mark this fantastic week. Many of the students complete their Tourism Project on Dublin but some look further into Ireland’s Ancient East, Hidden Heartlands or the Wild Atlantic way to complete this exciting piece of work.
Our annual visit to Dublin Airport also took place during spring where hosts DAA give a very informative talk on airport operations including how Dublin Airport can handle over 30m passengers annually along with any update on future developments planned for Dublin and Cork Airports.
Our students also experienced direct industry essentials completing a Walking tour of Dublin, a fantastic trip to Ireland’s number 1 tourist attraction - The Guinness Storehouse and the St Martin’s Apostolate Moving Crib where some of the students are completing work experience.
Throughout the year many of our students completed work experience in front-line customer service roles in travel agencies, hotel reception and retail customer service.
It is an exciting time for the Travel and Tourism industry with an abundance of career opportunities and we are delighted to confirm that some of our recent graduates have secured positions in top airlines, airport handling agents, hotels and travel companies. In addition, some of our current students are in the process of applying for roles as cabin crew, guest service agents and holiday reps for summer 2019 so we look forward to the new year and another great year for the travel industry.
