Health Department Year in Review
2018 was a very successful year for our Health Department. Highlights include the growth of our tutor team to include very senior, experienced staff who are dedicated to guiding students through their courses to achieve successful outcomes in both further education and employment within the sector.
During 2018 our students completed a number of invaluable placements across hospital and care home settings as part of their studies. They gained important insights from structured work experience in a number of large, established health institutions such as National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire, Our Lady of Lourdes, Drogheda and St. Michael’s House Baldoyle. We would also like to take this opportunity also to thank our supportive work placement supervisors who very generously provide support and guidance to our students throughout their studies.
Our recent Graduates
We are very proud of all of our graduates who have gone on to achieve success at university, securing highly sought-after places to on general nursing programmes and mental health nursing programmes in DCU. More students have progressed to study occupational therapy at degree level both in Ireland and the UK. A number of our students have also gone directly in to employment working as Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and Occupational Therapy Assistants at Peamount Hospital and Highfield Healthcare. In full support to our students along their journey we provide guidance in preparing applications, personal statements and interview practice.
We developed some of our most popular health courses as a blended learning option to further improve the accessibility of our health programmes. Our Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapy Assistants and Physiotherapy Assistants courses are now delivered through an online and workshop based approach. These courses allow students to complete their coursework online with the support of our resource tutors. Students are also invited to attend a number of Saturday workshops to support their assignment, exam and placement completion.
We have also recruited a number of specialist tutors to work on our Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy programmes. Our tutors are highly qualified practitioners (with MSc or PhD qualifications) who are also currently working in industry as applied Occupational and Speech and Language Therapists.
The integration of these tutors across our full and part-time courses has proven very successful in the development of self-directed, competent and skilled graduates who are now working effectively in a number of healthcare disciplines.
