Career Outlook: Special Needs Assisting

Special Needs Assistants are recruited in an educational setting in a capacity to assist in the care of pupils with additional needs in a non-teaching nature. Ultimately, it is a care and support role, working under the full guidance and supervision of the class teacher.

Special needs assistants make a huge contribution in supporting those through their time in education while providing a safety net for the child, and a friendly face they can grow to trust. Special Needs Assisting is undeniably a rewarding career, an invaluable asset to a classroom and an essential piece to the education system.

Special Needs Assistants work in mainstream and dedicated special needs schools. Opportunities range from full-time to part-time, contract, substitute through to permanent roles. Career prospects are ongoing in schools across Ireland. We selected just one website to demonstrate the encouraging job market with 28 special needs assistant roles currently advertised across the country in schools on EducationPosts.ie.  Advertised roles include primary and secondary schools across full-time, permanent and standard positions. Once registered to the website you can keep up to date with all new job announcements in your area.

In support of employment opportunities QQI courses at Portobello Institute ultimately prepare our learners to take on and progress across a variety of roles within the sector. We offer relevant training in special needs assisting for both QQI Level 5 & 6. The Level 5 course is the industry standard and covers all fundamentals required for the role. The Level 6 course is more advanced and offers students a broader knowledge and a greater understanding of the issues surrounding disabilities and learning difficulties. Both courses together allow learners to be fully equipped to meet the needs of the children.

We offer students a continued schedule of QQI Level 5 and 6 courses to allow for ongoing advertised roles throughout the year. In our continued commitment to make education accessible to all learners they can study through part-timeintensive and distance learning.
