This full-time Fashion Management programme follows on from the first year Fashion Buying & Merchandising programme. Building on the skills acquired in first year, the content of this programme is designed to enhance students skills to fast-track progression up the career ladder in the business environment of the global fashion industry.
Considering and understanding the complex critical paths in range planning including balancing lead times, design options, pricing strategies, sourcing strategies and the movement of stock into and out of the business are core elements of the Advanced Fashion Buying & Merchandising module. Factors affecting the supply chain including product market strategies and external forces within the market are also studies during this module.
The long-term development of any retail fashion business is more and more dependent on the contribution of retail and visual merchandisers. This comprehensive programme studies the retail environment from the perspective of consumer behaviour and how global consumers respond to the branded fashion environment. Participation in practical retail visual merchandising projects is a core element with window display, planograms for retail stores and department floor retail display covered in detail.
Having the ability to forecast trends needs a complete understanding of the design and development of a complete range for a fashion season. Portobello Institute has designed and developed the module of Advanced Design Skills to give students the opportunity to develop these skills. This module covers in detail design and development of an entire range, garment specification and construction, pattern cutting and advanced trend forecasting. Students undertake a practical project for this module, designing a full seasonal range.
Complementing these fashion focused modules are the core business subjects of marketing, human resource management, business management and finance. Advanced spreadsheet skills is a core skills of anyone working in the business of fashion and is often a practical skills test at interview stage for major retailers. Students are prepared in detail to use MS Excel and complete the financial analysis that will be expected of them.
Gaining employment in the business side of the fashion industry is the objective from this course and it is important students have the opportunity to gain practical experience and build a network of contacts within the sector. Portobello Institute has an established network of connections with many of the main fashion buying and merchandising departments within some of Ireland's largest retailers. This year we are delighted with the support of Primark offering a 1 year paid internship to a graduate of this programme. The work experience programme for this programme affords students with the opportunity to engage with some of the leading fashion brands in Ireland and the UK and leverage those connections to advance their careers. These include brands operating in the luxury fashion arena such as Brown Thomas and Harvey Nichols to brands operating in fast-moving high fashion such as Primark and Vero Moda. Students may also take up an international work experience placement at the end of the programme with a global brand operating in UK, US, Sweden, Spain or Portugal. Companies participating on our work experience programme invest considerable time in our students and recruit directly from this placement programme.
This Fashion Management has been designed by our experienced programme management and tutoring team in consultation with leading retailers to offer you the opportunity to advance your skills and progress to the next level in the business environment of the global fashion industry. The relevant field trips, events and guest lecturers all enhance your opportunity to gain further relevant and practical experience. You will learn to develop a complete fashion range for a season from the initial design concept through to delivery in-store, measuring the success and reaction of consumers. This is a comprehensive course which prepare graduates to undertake a variety of roles within the world of fashion, business and retailing.

Entry is by direct application to Portobello Institute and is based on interview selection. There are pre-requisite requirements. Students must hold one of the following qualifications;
- QQI Level 5 in Retail Practice – available in Portobello Institute
- Portobello Institute Certificate in Fashion Buying & Merchandising
- Undergraduate Degree in Business, Finance or Design

Places on this programme are limited. By interviewing all applicants, we can verify each student has the apptitude and personality to secure employment and progress to a management position in the fashion industry. The interview will take place at a time convenient to applicants and is carried out by the programme manager. Our programme manager is seeking to understand that applicants have a genuine interest in working within the fashion industry, they understand the sector, the requirements of the programme and that this programme and Portobello Institute is the right career choice for them.

Essential to progressing to a career in amanegement in the fashion industry is gaining a strategic sense of the global business environment including the cycles and trends particular to the fashion indutsry. Building a network of contacts and meeting other professionals in the Fashion industry is key to career progression. Portobello Institute has integrated a number of key events within the fashion calendar to expose students of this course to the professionals working in the sector.
Fashion Event Showcasing Irish Designers
Each year, students of this programme collaborate together with first year students to create a showcase event for Irish designers. Students have the opportunity to work with designers in a setting that exposes them to managing the event production for a showcase setting.
Portobello Institute organises trips each year to the following major fashion events in the annual calendar;
- Fashion City, Dublin
- Pure in London
- Moda in Birmingham
- Pret-a-Porter, Milan, Italy
These are usually one day return trips and are booked with minimal cost for students. They are not included in the fees and are optional.
Once off guest lectures are organised throughout the calendar year to give students and opportunity to gain insight into either a particular brand, the career of an established and successful professional in the fashion industry or an upcoming trend in fashion. These lecturers vary year to year but are always an interesting experience for our students.
This programme is 24 weeks in duration and is delivered over 2 semesters with examinations at the end of each semester. Practical classes are delivered in a fully equipped training rooms with theory classes taking place in one of the many theory rooms within Portobello Institute
Based on feedback from past students, we have condensed the class schedule to two and half days per week. This maximises the time available to students and allows them the time needed to study, participate on the work experience programme and work part-time. It also reduces the commuting time and accommodation expenses potentially incurred by students traveling from outside of Dublin.
The first semester runs for 12 weeks from 07/10/19 to 17/01/20.

The second semester runs for 12 weeks from 27/01/20 to 17/04/20.

The internship programme takes place during semester 2. The schedule is determined by the needs of the company the student is placed with.
International internship placements take place at the end of semester 2.
The aim of this programme is to give students the skills to progress their career to a management position within the fashion industry. This programme builds on the key topics covered in first year that are specific to working in fashion management. These include buying, merchandising, trend forecasting, range planning, advanced design skills including garment specification. The content of this programme also supports the development of the generic management skills need to work in a management position in any business environment.

Paid Internship with Primark
This year we are delighted to announce such is the success of past pupils working for Primark in their buying and merchandising department, Primark are now offering the opportunity of a full 1 year paid internship within their business. This is a siginificant opportunity to gain experience within a global brand that is fast growing and is renowned to be the best within its segment of the fashion industry. The selection of the candidate to participate on this internship is based on their performance during this programme, followed by a competitive interview process as set down by Primark.

International Work Experience Placements
Portobello Institute is delighted to support students seeking to broaden their experience with an international work experience placement programme. This programme is optional and commences at the end of semester 2. Students participating on this programme are required to take a placement for a minimum of 3 months and those placements are availavble in the UK, Sweden, Spain, Portugal and the US. Students seeking to avail of placements in the US must meet the necessary visa requirements.
