Visual Impairment Awareness. Distance Learning

In the present ever changing and evolving world of today, diversity, equality and differentiation are commonly used terms. Therefore, in accordance with The Equality Status Act 2000, valuing and accommodating all citizens of the state, regardless of impairments is essential. This course aims to provide the student with an insight and indepth knowledge of visual impairment issues, which will help you to respond appropriately and confidently when dealing or working with people who are blind or who have significant sight loss.

By choosing to study this course with Portobello Institute, students will have access to course materials from our online learning centre for the duration of the course. The course materials for this certified course are thorough and easy to read and can be downloaded in your own time and from the comfort of your own home. You will also be assigned a personal tutor for the duration of the course who will help you with any challenges you may encounter. In addition you will be able to upload assignments online and receive online feedback. You can use our online learning centre from any computer that has internet access. However, access to a computer is not compulsory as we can arrange for everything to be processed by post. There is an administration fee of €30 for this service.

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

As this course is delivered through distance learning the student works at their own pace. Each student has 6 months to complete this course

  • Online Learning Centre (requires internet access), or
  • By Post (note that there is an admin fee of €30 for postal students)

One short assignment will be required to successfully complete this course

  2. Definitions of the different levels and degrees of visual impairment
  3. The incidence of sight loss
  4. The different ways to communicate and do’s and don’ts
  5. How best to approach situations, guidelines on leading a person with visual impairment
  6. Use of language and terminology
  7. Myths and fears surrounding sight loss
  8. Using assistive technology with a person with visual impairment
  9. Suggested adaptations to school / work / home environment
