Are you interested in starting your journey to becoming a nurse? Portobello Institute’s Nursing Studies course is designed as a programme of preparatory study to enter a degree course in Nursing.  This QQI Level 5 Major Award in Nursing Studies is a qualification that will allow you to apply for training positions in General Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Intellectual Disability Nursing and Children's Nursing. During this 8-month course you will develop practical skills and qualities that will equip you for further studies in nursing and future employment. You can study this degree in your own time through blended learning, with a combination of tutorial seminars and online learning. What is blended learning?

This QQI level 5 Major Award in Nursing Studies has been specifically designed for delivery by blended learning. You will need to attend 11 scheduled workshops which will aid your studies. It is very suited to you if you are working full-time with limited spare time, yet you want to achieve your degree qualification. During the induction workshop, you will be given your log-in details to the online portal. Here you will find course notes, reading lists, podcasts, articles of interest and assessment guidelines. The content is structured in an easy to "find and follow" week by week format. You will need basic computer skills such as searching the internet and typing a word document.

Each module commences with an induction seminar and you will meet your lead tutor during this seminar. You can upload your assessments and your tutor will give you feedback on whether you are on the right track before you submit the final version. Blended learning allows you to study at your time with support available throughout your learning journey.

What will I learn during this QQI Level 5 Major Award Nursing Studies?

During this course, you will learn the basic principles of infection control and are taught to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control. They will learn the structure and function of the human body and gain an understanding of the interrelationship between the systems of the body. They study the levels of personal development to understand the concepts of mental age and chronological age in order to be able to relate to people at a level appropriate to their needs. You will learn how to care for patients in hygienic and safe environment.

Can I use this course for entry through CAO on to a Nursing Degree?

Graduates who achieve the required standard may progress to study nursing in Universities and Institutes of Technology. For certain programmes in Higher Education Institutes, there is a quota of places reserved for students holding QQI major awards.  When applying for one of these places, it is the results of the QQI Level 5 award in Nursing Studies used rather than leaving certificate results. Portobello Institute encourages students to apply for entry via this system. The Student Support Clinic offers students one to one tutorial support to achieve the grades necessary. We also support students applying through UCAS for a place on a nursing degree in a British University. We give students one to one interview preparation with experienced healthcare professionals. There is also workshop support for those completing the personal statement element of the UCAS application procedure. The programme management and tutor team for this QQI level 5 award in Nursing Studies are entirely focused in ensuring students of this programme, have the best possible opportunity to achieve their career ambitions.

QQI Level 5 Major Award Certificate in Nursing Studies (5M4349)

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. Learners should hold a minimum of a Leaving Certificate or relevant life or work experience.

Application Process

Step 1 - Complete the online booking form.

Step 2 - Applicants will be contacted and an interview arranged

Step 3 - Interview takes place

Step 4  - Confirmation of an offer of a place will be given to applicants meeting the selection criteria, with a formal offer emailed within 3 days of the interview.

Step 5 - Applicants have 14 days to confirm their acceptance of an offer by returning the acceptance form

The Interview

Places on this programme are limited. By interviewing all applicants, we can verify each student has the apptitude and personality for a career in nursing. The interview will take place at a time convenient to applicants and is carried out by the programme manager. Our programme manager is also seeking to understand that applicants have a genuine interest in working within healthcare, they understand the sector, the requirements of the programme and that this programme and Portobello Institute is the right career choice for them.

* Students can enroll on this course at any time of the year. If students are using this course to progress onto an undergraduate degree in nursing you must complete all modules within one academic year.
