Over 30 weeks, this IWFM level 5 Diploma qualification gives you a broad understanding of the FM profession and provides you with the skills needed to complete complex, non-routine tasks within workplace and facilities management.

Achievement of the IWFM Level 5 Diploma in FM reflects the ability of the Facilities Manager to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to address complex problems. This programme seeks to deliver to you, an understanding of different perspectives, diverse approaches and an independent school of thought when proposing a course of action in the FM context. Live case studies delivered by senior industry practitioners give a real insight into the varied world of Facilities Management.

The delivery of this programme is by interactive webinar sessions and online learning allowing you the flexibility to study from a location convenient to you. Webinars are recorded allowing you the opportunity to catch up should you miss a session.

As an academic Instituion we recognise, in Portobello Institute, every student has different needs. We allocate additional time at the end of each webinar for Q&A with the module lecturer. This interactive webinar, together with the one to one support available, gives a learning journey unique to your learning style and needs.

Who is this programme for?

The IWFM level 5 qualification is aimed at facilities managers with existing experience working in middle to senior management with responsibilities for specialised and complex FM functions. This programme is also suitable for those aspiring to these roles. You may also be considering undertaking the MSc in Facilties & Workplace Management - this IWFM level 5 Diploma qualification is an excellent basis upon which to prepare for and build the academic writing and research skills needed to complete a Masters.

Alternatively you may be considering the BSc (Hons) in Facilities & Workplace Management. Holders of this IWFM level 5 Diploma gain advanced entry to year 3 of the degree meaning you will only require one further year of study after this diploma to achieve an honours degree.

What will I learn during the IWFM Level 5 Diploma in FM?

The purpose of this course is to equip you with the knowledge, skills and competence to use as a facilities manager in a range off complex FM environments. The learning outcomes for this course include:

  • Enable the critical evaluation of operational and strategic facilities management
  • Equip students to develop and apply effectives strategies for managing people in facilities management
  • Develop understanding of the importance of risk management in facilities management
  • Deliver an understanding of financial management in facilities management
How will I learn?

This course has been specifically re-designed for delivery by online learning with live interactive webinar sessions. It is very suited to you if you have a busy work and home life and want to fit study around this. During the induction, you will be given your log-in details to the online portal,  "ePortobello". Here you will find course notes, reading lists, articles of interest and assessment guidelines. The content is structured in an easy to "find and follow"  format. You will need basic computer skills such as searching the internet and typing a word document. The webinars are scheduled every 2nd week on the same evening to give structure to your learning journey and encourage you to continue to progress through the programme. The break between webinars allows you time to work on the assessment.

There is one to one tutor support available to you during your learning journey. You can upload your assessments and your support tutor will give you feedback on whether you are on the right track. Online learning allows you to study at your time with support available  when you need it. Integrated throughout the programme are webinars, designed to give you the connection between theory and practice in facilities management.

What is a Webinar?

A webinar, in the context of online learning, is a lecturer delivering a presentation or class online to a group of students. We use specifically designed elearning software so you can participate in the class just as if you were present in the same room. You can ask a question of the lecturer at any stage during the class. The software is designed with "break-out rooms" where you can discuss a topic or complete a group exercise with a smaller group from your class. You will need a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone that has internet connection, an audio facility so you can hear and speak during the class and a camera so your lecturer and fellow class participants can see you. The webinar is a secure online environment and only those permitted entry by the lecturer can gain access to the "classroom". Webinars are recorded during each session and should you miss a session, you can catch up with the recorded session at a later date. You will only be able to access Webinars of the group you are assigned to.

Featured Lecturer - Eoin O'Sullivan

Eoin O'Sullivan is one of the lecturing team on the IWFM Level 5 Diploma. Eoin began his career in 1990 in Mechanical services working on construction projects in the greater Munster area, including the Apple Inc. Cork Airport and Debeers, culminating in 2000 as a mechanical project supervisor. He went on to take up a position in a large private healthcare facility in Cork in which he began his journey in Facilities Management. In this role he was responsible for some key aspects of strategic management and operational functions. In the last few years Eoin continued that journey, moving to a large University to become a significant member of the FM team sharing his experience and vision with the organisation.

Eoin describes himself as a keen advocate of continuous personal and professional development and feels businesses today recognise this aspect and rewards it.  He has achieved multiple qualifications in areas such as; mechanical services, process and chemical engineering, electrical and gas systems, leading empowered organisations, IOSH accreditation and project management.

Eoin’s vast experience in these subjects, coupled with 10 years construction experience, and over 20 years of facility management, allows him to cultivate rapport with students and develop course work and material based on practical experience in the workplace.

As qualified Engineer and a proud member of Engineer’s Ireland, Eoin takes pride in his attention to precision and detail.

Upon completion of this course, you will be awarded the IWFM Level 5 Diploma in Facilities Management.

This qualification is designed for specialist facilities managers and those working at middle or senior management level who are responsible for specialised and complex functions. It is also suitable for those aspiring to work in such a role that currently work within the profession.

This IWFM level 5 programme is available to study through webinars and online content. The content is available on "ePortobello" and is structured in an easy to follow "week by week" format.

The webinars are scheduled every 2nd week on the same evening to give structure to your learning journey and encourage you to continue to progress through the programme. The break between webinars allows you time to work on the assessment. It takes 32 weeks to complete the webinars with a further 6 weeks for submission of assignments at the end of the course. Webinars are recorded and should you miss a session, you can catch up with the recorded session at a later date. You will only be able to access Webinars of the group you are assigned to.

The programme commences with an induction webinar that gives you the details of what to expect throughout the course, how to access the information on ePortobello, how to contact your programme support team and an overview of the course and assessments you will complete during the 8 months of this programme. The induction session is held usually 3 - 5 days, prior to the start date of the course.

Assessment Criteria

Assignments are work-based, reflecting live business projects and activities. These are the core assessment techniques used for this qualification.

There are 8 modules covered during this IWFM Level 5 Diploma in Facilities Management programme.

Organisational and Facilities Management Strategy

The module enables you to analyse, implement, review and update the facilities management strategy based on an understanding of its relationship with organisational strategies and effectively communicate the facilities management strategy to a wide audience. Understanding approaches to developing a facilities management strategy, review, implementation and communication to various stakeholders are core elements of this module.

This module enables you to undertake an analytical overview of the scope and context of facilities management, including the impact of change, development and innovation on facilities management practices and to understand how the scope and extent of the facilities management industry has changed

Managing People in FM

This module enables you to review, develop and implement human resource management strategies from recruitment through to exit, in compliance with employment legislation.  Managing and monitoring staff performance in a facilities management context together with recruiting, retention and exiting staff are all covered during this module.

Property and Asset Management in FM

This module enables you to implement strategies for managing property portfolios, property costs and asset registers, influence building design and undertake property relocations in a facilities management context. Undertaking property relocations from planning though to selecting resources and finally analysing the outcome are also covered during this module.
 

Managing Procurement and Contacts in FM

This module enables you to apply the principles of procurement, contracts and contract management in various facilities management scenarios and evaluate decisions made. It enables you to use and manage different types of contracts, develop specifications and terms and conditions for the procurement of goods and services and manage costs.

Risk Management in FM

This module enables you to develop a risk management policy, establish risk criteria and improve and review the risk management process and strategy. Disseminating a risk management policy and  culture within the organisation is the role of senior FMs and is covered throughout this module.

Development and Trends in FM

This module enables you to undertake an analytical overview of the scope and context of facilities management, including the impact of change, development and innovation on facilities management practices and to understand how the scope and extent of the facilities management industry has changed

Financial Management in FM

This module enables a you to apply the principles of financial management and financial policies to facilities management.  To effectively manage budgets and cash flow and to prepare financial cases and understanding sound financial policies are a key responsibility of FMs working at a senior level.

Managing Health & Safety in FM

This module enables you to manage health and safety in the workplace, develop and review health and safety policies and promote a proactive health and safety culture in compliance with legislative requirements, within a facilities management context

 

Exemptions

Those holding a IWFM Level 4 Certificate or Diploma are exempt from one of the following:

Managing Health & Safety in FM

Designing a learning journey that is unique to each student is part of the ethos of the academic philosophy of Portobello Institute. Each webinar finishes with a 30 minute Q&A session that allows you to interact with the lecturer and ask a range of questions. Alternatively if you have grasped the topic, you can log off once the session is completed.

Each module is led by an experienced educator with many years FM experience. Their role is to support you to grasp the concepts of FM by giving you insight into their experience in the sector and supporting you to complete the assignments for each module. You will also be assigned a Personal Academic Support Tutor who will support your learning journey - reviewing draft assignments, giving you feedback and generally being available to answer any queries you may have.

The course price is €4995 and is inclusive of IWFM membership fees.

Deposit of 28% payable upon booking with 6 payments of 12% due on 1st of month commencing the first month after the programme commences. Administration fee of €295.
