Who is this programme for?
The IWFM level 4 qualification is aimed at those working at an operational management level. This programme is also suitable to those aspiring to this role and seeking to stretch and develop themselves along this path. Holders of this IWFM Level 4 diploma may apply for advanced entry to year 2 of the BSc (Hons) in Facilities Management available through Portobello Institute.
What will I learn during the IWFM Level 4 Diploma in FM?
The purpose of this course is to equip you with the knowledge, skills and competence to use as a facilities manager in a range off complex FM environments. The learning outcomes for this course include:

How will I learn?
This course has been specifically re-designed for delivery by online learning with live interactive webinar sessions. It is very suited to you if you have a busy work and home life and want to fit study around this. During the induction, you will be given your log-in details to the online portal, "ePortobello". Here you will find course notes, reading lists, articles of interest and assessment guidelines. The content is structured in an easy to "find and follow" format. You will need basic computer skills such as searching the internet and typing a word document.
There is one to one tutor support available to you during your learning journey. You can upload your assessments and your support tutor will give you feedback on whether you are on the right track. Online learning allows you to study at your time with support available when you need it. Integrated throughout the programme are webinars, designed to give you the connection between theory and practice in facilities management.
What is a Webinar?
A webinar, in the context of online learning, is a lecturer delivering a presentation or class online to a group of students. We use specifically designed elearning software so you can participate in the class just as if you were present in the same room. You can ask a question of the lecturer at any stage during the class. The software is designed with "break-out rooms" where you can discuss a topic or complete a group exercise with a smaller group from your class. You will need a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone that has internet connection, an audio facility so you can hear and speak during the class and a camera so your lecturer and fellow class participants can see you. The webinar is a secure online environment and only those permitted entry by the lecturer can gain access to the "classroom". Webinars are recorded during each session and should you miss a session, you can catch up with the recorded session at a later date. You will only be able to access Webinars of the group you are assigned to.

Featured Lecturer - Gerry Kelly
For over 40 years Gerry worked in both the Private and Public Sectors. During that time he held the position of Chief Executive with a Semi State Organisation; Press Secretary to the Minister for Finance and Minister for Labour; Senior Director Roles in Public Relations, Human Resources, Facilities Management, Customer Service, Corporate and Social Responsibility and Emotional Intelligence in State and Semi State Bodies.
Working with Portobello Institute for the past 8 years he provides student support on its BIFM Programmes along with lecturing on the Institutes CSR, Customer Relations, Strategic Management and Risk Management Programmes. His main reason for lecturing is to continue working with people on their personal and career development while sharing with them his world of work experiences.
Gerry has direct hands-on and tutoring experience of almost 20 years in the areas of Customer Service, Active Citizenship and Corporate and Social Responsibility and has studied Active Citizenship and Corporate and Social Responsibility at North Western University Chicago; Advanced Strategic Management and International Marketing at the International Management Development Institute, Geneva; Commerce at UCD and Senior Executive Development, Irish Management Institute.
Working with Multi National Corporations in Ireland, the US and Europe he designed, developed, tutored and implemented over 100 Corporate and Social Responsibility, Customer Service, Education, Emotional Intelligence and Cross Border Programmes targeted at influencing and improving the work opportunities and lives of people living in the Inner Cities of Belfast and Dublin.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded the IWFM Level 4 Diploma in Facilities Management.
This qualification is ideal for professionals working at an operational management level, responsible for managing day-to-day operations either in-house or outsourced. It is also suitable for those aspiring to work in such a role that currently work within the FM profession.

This IWFM level 4 programme is available to study through webinars and online content. The content is available on "ePortobello" and is structured in an easy to follow "week by week" format.
The webinars are scheduled every 2nd week on the same evening to give structure to your learning journey and encourage you to continue to progress through the programme. The break between webinars allows you time to work on the assessment. It takes 36 weeks to complete the webinars with a further 6 weeks available for submission of assignments at the end of the course. Webinars are recorded and should you miss a session, you can catch up with the recorded session at a later date. You will only be able to access Webinars of the group you are assigned to.
The programme commences with an induction webinar that gives you the details of what to expect throughout the course, how to access the information on ePortobello, how to contact your programme support team and an overview of the course and assessments you will complete during the 8 months of this programme. The induction session is held usually 3 - 5 days, prior to the start date of the course.
Assignments are work-based, reflecting live business projects and activities. These are the core assessment techniques used for this qualification.

Overview of Facilities Management
This unit enables learners to develop an understanding of the scope and extent of the facilities management function and the range of associated services, the roles and responsibilities in different organisations and contexts as well as the importance of the contribution of facilities management in both societal and economic contexts.
Managing Health & Safety in Own Area of FM
This unit enables learners to develop and enhance knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety in the workplace and the Facilities Manager’s role and responsibilities in monitoring and reviewing safety systems.
Risk Management in FM
This unit enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles, techniques and methodologies of risk management in a range of scenarios and the Facilities Manager’s role in business continuity planning and disaster recovery
Financial Management in FM
This unit enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles and application of management accounting, the use of capital and revenue budgets, cash flow and the preparation of financial cases in a facilities management context.
FM Support Services Operations
This unit enables learners to develop an understanding of a wide range of facilities management support services operations and how to manage and monitor the delivery of those services within safe systems of work and budgetary constraints.
This unit enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the drivers, tools and principles involved in developing and monitoring facilities management strategies in relation to risk profiles and the overall business strategy.
People Management for FM’s
This unit enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices and legal requirements of leading and managing staff in a facilities management context.
Property & Asset Management in FM
This unit enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of property and asset management in a range of different scenarios and how to plan and manage property relocations.
Procurement and Contract Management in FM
This unit enables learners to develop their understanding of procurement and the different types of contract. Learners will also find out about the use of specifications and terms and conditions in the procurement of goods and services, as well as the procurement costs they might expect to face.
These module qualifications are assessed against clear learning outcomes. Assessment tasks and assignments are practical and work-based, reflecting real-life scenarios, ensuring you can apply your knowledge.
Designing a learning journey that is unique to each student is part of the ethos of the academic philosophy of Portobello Institute. Each webinar finishes with a 30 minute Q&A session that allows you to interact with the lecturer and ask a range of questions. Alternatively if you have grasped the topic, you can log off once the session is completed.
Each module is led by an experienced educator with many years FM experience. Their role is to support you to grasp the concepts of FM by giving you insight into their experience in the sector and supporting you to complete the assignments for each module. You will also be assigned a Personal Academic Support Tutor who will support your learning journey - reviewing draft assignments, giving you feedback and generally being available to answer any queries you may have.
