BSc (Hons) Sports Degrees - Advanced Entry Yr 2

Our academic delivery teams are all also working remotely and are supporting our students to continue with their studies through online learning or to get started for those just commencing their learning journey.  

What is advanced entry?

Portobello Institute recognises the value of prior learning and has mapped common QQI awards to the first year of the BSc Hons degrees in its sports department. If you hold one of these awards or equivalent, you will not be required to study first year and will be afforded the opportunity to take advanced entry to the second year.

What programmes can I apply for advanced entry?

Advanced entry to year 2 is available for the following programmes;

  • BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy
  • BSc (Hons) Physical Education & Coaching
  • BSc (Hons) Sports Science & Performance Analysis
  • BSc (Hons) Sports Psychology, Coaching & Physical Education
How long do I have to study for and what are the study options available?

You will complete 2 years further study to gain a level 8 honours degree in your chosen discipline awarded by London Metropolitan University (LMU). You can choose to study full-time or by flexible delivery which is a combination of online learning and practical seminars.

What qualifications do I need to have for advanced entry?

Eligibilty for advanced entry to the sports degrees offered by Portobello Institute is detailed below;

BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy:

  • Successful completion of Level 6 QQI award in pre-university physiotherapy or sports science, with distinctions including Anatomy & Physiology, Massage, Biomechanics and Research modules

BSc (Hons) Physical Education & Coaching or BSc (Hons) Sports Science & Performance Analaysis or BSc (Hons) Sports Psychology, Coaching & PE:

  • Successful completion of level 6 QQI award in sports science with distinctions including Anatomy & Physiology, Biomechanics and Research modules.

Or

  • Evidence of Level 7 or 8 degree completion in a related subject with sufficient evidence of all comparable BSc PE level 4 (Psychology & Coaching, Gymnastics & Dance, Games & Athletics, Research). You may be required to take some additional modules (over the 2 years) to hold sufficient curricular specific credits for entry to PME if this is your desired career route.

Qualifications Frameworks in Ireland and the UK

The Irish and UK qualifications authorities have collaborated on initiatives that promote the transparency, recognition and mobility of qualifications between our respective jurisdictions. The qualifications authorities in the UK and Ireland have agreed the qualifications frameworks in operation, Brexit will not impact this agreement. Further guidance on this framework is available here.

Step 1 - Complete the online booking form.

Step 2 - Applicants will be contacted for confirmation of eligibility for advanced entry, applicants will be required to submit transcripts of previous qualifications.

Step 3  - Confirmation of a place will be given to applicants immediately meeting the criteria.

Applicants confirm acceptance of offer by returning acceptance form.

Please note places on this course are only confirmed once tuition fees have been received.

Students will be registered as an undergraduate degree student  with London  Metropolitan University.
