The Paediatric First Aid Workshop is ideal for both parents and also professional childcare facilities to prepare staff for emergency situations. This is a one day course specifically designed to teaching life saving skills with relation to children and incorporates the Irish Heart Foundation Heartsaver CPR course. This course is ideal for both parents and also professional childcare facilities to prepare staff for emergency situations. The course has major emphasis on dealing with accidents that happen to children from newborn to eight years of age. This unique course will give you the skills to deal with first aid and medical emergencies that occur with this age group.

Upon successful completion of the course participants are presented with a Childcare First Aid Certificate and a Heartsaver CPR card from the Irish Heart Foundation- which is valid for two years.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

Course structure

This is a one day workshop.

Course content modules

Approach to an accident - assessing the area, making the areas safe, giving emergency aid, getting help, intro to bandaging.
Disorders of Breathing & C.P.R - how do we breathe, problems with breathing, how does the heart beat, what is C.P.R, assessing the casulty, 1 & 2 person C.P.R, todler C.P.R, choking (various ages)
Wounds, Bleeding & Trauma - internal 7 external bleeding, treatments, types of wounds, bandaging techniques.
Fractures & Broken bones - the skeleton, types of fractures, recognition of a fracture, treatments, soft tissue injuries (sprains & strains), treatments of sprains & stains.
Burns & Scalds - what is a burn/scald, types of burns, treatment for general burns, electrical burns, chemical burns, clothing on fire.
Medical Emergencies - asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, poisoning & overdoses, meningitis, croup.
