Childcare professionals provide basic personal care and social care to children in a number of settings, including crèches, special schools, day centres, activity camps and residential homes. They support children with practical everyday tasks, as well as encouraging their personal and social development. This course is designed to introduce learners to the key areas of caring for children of a school going age and promotes their understanding of the underpinning theoretical framework of childcare principles and practice.
Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the stages of child development in terms of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The learner is equipped with the skills and knowledge to support the health, safety and nutritional needs of the older child and adolescent. They gain an understanding of the responsibilities in caring for the older child and adolescent in relation to child protection.
Contributing to the learning of the child is central to this programme and students develop the skills and knowledge to plan, implement and evaluate school age childcare programmes to provide opportunities for education, play, recreation and rest. They will also learn how to integrate children with special needs into these activities. The learner will develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to work with children who have additional needs, and support their inclusion and integration in an early childhood care and education service. They will understand the importance of inclusive practice within the early childhood service in supporting all children’s development, recognise the characteristics of a wide range of learning difficulties and conditions and appreciate the range of skills and knowledge necessary to work with, and support, children and families with additional needs. There is a requirement that students undertake 50 hours work experience as part of the programme. Learners develop core skills in childcare practice. It promotes the ability of students to work effectively in childcare settings and integrate all elements of practice within a coherent framework.
