  Year 2: Costume Design Diploma Course - Full Time  
     
 
       

Costume Designers research, design and prepare costumes for theatrical, film and television productions. They study the script and take location and period aspects into consideration before producing designs. The Costume Designer will design, source, purchase, hire and /or make all costumes for the production. They work closely with the artistic team to establish the visual requirements of the script in pre-production, making sure the colours and imagery will blend.

On this course students learn to use drawing as a means of communication and also gain an appreciation of the technological tools used in the design process. They explore a wide range of media and materials through diverse processes in two dimensions in order to foster their creative expression. Students study design and gain an understanding of the strategies inherent in the design process and are encouraged through arts, crafts and design to enhance their aesthetic, social, historical and cultural awareness.

Students attend readings of plays and carry out essential research into author, period, and theatrical genre to design costumes which contribute to an effective dramatic performance. They work with a range of multi-cultural costume types from classical to contemporary understand the function of costume in relation to character creation, mood enhancement and expression of theme in any staged performance. Students are taught how to construct costumes which can be worn in a variety of contexts under differing conditions. They learn the importance of team work, budgets and how to work within time and production constraints.

Entry Requirements:

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. Students must have completed Year 1 or equivalent to gain entry. For all full-time courses acceptance to the course is interview-based. There are no specific points requirements.

This course provides students with the necessary knowledge and expertise to pursue careers as Resident Costume Designers in Theatres, Freelance Costume Designers, Design Assistants, Costume Attendent. The course would also add a great addition to a Fashion Design students CV.
