The fashion industry in Ireland and internationally, constantly requires a supply of designers and design concepts to feed a massive consumer demand for clothes and accessories.

The Fashion Design course introduces students to the principles of fashion design. Through visual research students will cultivate the knowledge and skills to develop and construct innovative and creative garments.

This course is ideal for anyone already working in the fashion industry and wishes to develop their knowledge and skills. It is also suitable for anyone seeking a career change or looking to assess if this is the right career direction for them.

  • Portobello Institute Diploma in Fashion Design
  • FETAC Level 6 Major Award in Fashion Design AFDES

 Entry requirement:

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. For all full-time courses acceptance to the course is interview-based. Students should hold FETAC level 5 or equivalent for entry.

 Course structure:

This is a full time course delivered over 1 academic year.

Course content:

Fashion Design & Development

Learn the process of communicating ideas from an initial design brief. Through visual research of primary and secondary resources students will record and execute their ideas exploring the form, scale, colour and texture. Through design development students will create and illustrate original and innovative designs. They will understand the design process from concept to finished product.

Pattern Drafting

Understanding thoroughly the process involved in pattern drafting. From an initial design brief students will develop and manipulate their basic patterns to a specific body measurement. They will be introduced to the techniques of draping and the principles of size grading.

Garment Construction

The translation of an initial design brief from a 2D to a 3D form. The construction of a range of garments such as a coat, jacket, trousers, skirt, dress and shirt shapes. Students will also create a portfolio of sample techniques such as fastenings, pockets, hems, collars, cuffs, seams and surface decor.

Career Opportunities

Students on this course are equipped to undertake many roles in the fashion industry, from working with Haute couture Fashion Designers, to designers ready-to-wear ranges, to wholesale manufacturers for the high street outlets. These designers are at the forefront of style, creating designs and/or fashion accessories that suit or often predict trends and market demands. They design garments for individual clients and produce seasonal collections that influence the rest of the fashion industry. This is a global business with excellent career opportunities available internationally for the well trained creative individual.
