Róisín of Tralee - June 2010
Portobello Institute are delighted to be sponsoring Róisín McGrenra (22) in her bid to become the next Dublin Rose of Tralee.
Róisín McGrenra (22), from Inishowen in North Donegal, who works as a part-Time Irish tutor and administrator for Portobello Institute, has entered the selection process for the Dublin Rose for the internationally renowned Rose of Tralee competition.
Róisín, who lives with her best friend in Inchicore, studied Irish and Sociology at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth and has been working with Portobello Institute since she graduated, two years ago. Portobello Institute is a private college offering post-leaving certificate programmes in Fashion, Business, Travel &Tourism, Beauty, Sports, Montessori, and Childcare, both here in Dublin and throughout Ireland. Róisín works as an administrator and now she runs two administration departments, overseeing the Venues Department and the Results & Certification Department.
Even though quite young, Róisín also has developed and wrote the Irish module for the Full-Time Montessori course within the college which she now teaches. “I never thought I’d be interested in teaching (especially seeing as my parents are both teachers), but I really enjoy and love teaching Irish. I have taught a wide range of students including students from America, Brazil, Italy, France, Scotland and Tanzania. It gives me great satisfaction when someone from France can tell me their name, their age and where they are from in Irish.”
Portobello Institute works closely with the charity Zest4Kidz in which Róisín is currently fundraising for. Zest4Kidz is an Irish based charity that organizes regular trips and projects to help children. The three main areas that the charity supports are; Child Soldiers in Africa, Children in slums and on the streets in India and Children in Prisons and Orphanages in Eastern Europe. Last year, she travelled to Belarus where she met extraordinary young girls who have come from difficult backgrounds and tough situations, which resulted in them getting into trouble and ending up in a juvenile prison. This trip had such a profound effect on Róisín and this year she plans to go on another trip this time to India, where a team will bring love and joy to children who have been rescued from the slum areas and are vulnerable and at risk.
She is now currently preparing for her selection night taking place this Friday, the 18th of June, in the Carlton Airport Hotel, where she will be put through her paces with fifteen other girls. “I am so excited. I cannot wait. A few of my friends are coming down from Donegal and everyone is making posters”.
She can foresee that a few people might think it strange that the Dublin Rose could have a strong Donegal accent, but this hasn’t fazed her. “People have asked me why I chose to enter the Dublin Rose selections and not the Donegal Rose selections, but I work and live here. This is my home now. Donegal is my holiday destination!!!”
To win the Dublin Rose and represent the city and county in The Dome in Tralee would be a dream come true for Róisín. “As cliché as it sounds, the Rose of Tralee has been watched in my house every year, without fail, for as long as I can remember. I think it’s every little girl’s dream to be a Rose and I certainly am no exception. I would absolutely love to be a Rose. My parents always had said that I should apply for the Rose of Tralee and my friends believe that I would be the perfect candidate. I don’t think I could express just how much I would love to become a Rose.”

OPERATION TRANSFORMATION
We are delighted to be suporting one of our Montessori students Sonia Cole in the new series of Operation Transformation. Heres what she has to say...
"well i have to say i'm really enjoying the course in Montessori Teaching, I find it's a very interesting course and definately nourishment for the mind. I find it especially interesting as i have a 7 month old and a 4year old son and I find i am learning from my 4year old every step of the way. I'm so glad i decided to do the course and would say to anyone who is even considering doing the course they should go for it, as it's so interesting and you will never be bored, you're brain is motivated in more ways then one and to understand where Maria Montessori is coming from in all her teaching is fantastic, you get a clear understanding of the developing mind of the child....as we have decided that our class are now "Trainee Gaurdian Angels of the minds that are concentrated in work, ensuring that we will improve them".
I decided to take part in Operation Transformation as a new year resolution for myself. Grasping this year as my year, by doing both Montessori Teacher course in Drogheda with Portobello Institute hopefully achieving a Diploma and by doing Operation Transformation with RTE. I'm finding that when the reality of what it is that is involved in operation transformation, that it's not just a tv programme it's the chance to change my lifestyle for the long term it hit me like a bus. The first week was exhilerating the second hit with a bang, but pushing forward each day, pushing to achieve at the end of the day a lifestyle change for the best not only for me but for my family too. Yes i've cried for that bar of chocolate, winged for that can of coke but at the same time realising that what i was going to achieve in the long run was more than a cheap affair with junk food....Doing operation transformation with a group of "Parents" we are pushing one another away from tHe biscuit barrell and into the world of healthy living, picking one another up when we are low, setting challenges for us each week, tackling things we perhaps would never do on a normal day to day basis but hey it's good to set a challenge and try something new...We are also for every Lb we loose putting in a euro hoping at the end our weight loss transpires into money for charity, with the help of local businesses matching our weekly weight loss.... We're parents on a mission, all brought together through a parenting website www.mumstown.ie where we moan at each other and also spur eachother on too, we can also be seen on rte1 every wed 8pm or on rte.ie/ot.
Here's to a successful academic year and a new me.
Sonia

The idea is that this framework can plant the seeds through which each service can grow to its full potential in its own distinctive way. November 2009 - Taste of Dublin 2009 Report
You may have noticed in our last update some extremely encouraging words from a past student of ours Neilia Villaneuva. Well here's what her daughter, Joy Isabel, had to say about her work experience during here time studying with us:
" Every year as we all know, Portobello Institute offers work experience programme for their students. This programme enables student to gain further experience in the job market as well as to enhance their knowledge and skills through practical application.
This year, some students from Portobello Institute including my brother Joebel (who previously took Hotel, Catering and Hospitality Management in Portobello School) and myself are given an opportunity to gain work experience from this company called Brand Events (or Taste Festivals). This company is an events marketing firm responsible for the annual Taste of Dublin event.
Every year here in Dublin, a four-day of fine food and drink is celebrated. People all throughout Ireland gather to socialise, to enjoy live entertainment, and to experience the very best of the city’s most prestigious restaurants and chefs serving and showcasing sample-sized signature dishes.
I am so delighted to be a part of this event this year. I got to know Mary O’Connor, Operations Manager for Taste Festivals. She assigned me to work as an Usherette for Brown Thomas V.I.P. Suite. My responsibilities included greeting the guest ensuring all people who go inside the V.I.P. suite are wearing the proper identification badge. Also, I have assisted some Taste Festivals staffs in organising the V.I.P. suite before and after shifts in order to run things smoothly and efficiently.
My first day was exciting. We were tasked to be at the staff room half an hour before the event starts for a quick briefing. The event started at 4:00pm. To officially open the Taste of Dublin 2009 event, Taste Festivals started the event by conducting a brief Press Conference in the Brown Thomas V.I.P. suite. There were a lot of guest who came over such as the Media people, the CEO of Brown Thomas, Brown Thomas staffs, some Celebrity Chefs, different business owners who were also participating in the event, and other high-profiled personalities. It was really a great experience to get to know some of them. After the press conference, Taste of Dublin 2009 was officially opened to public.
From second to final day, we started work at 11:00am and finished at 10:00pm. We normally get an hour or half an hour break depending on how busy the suite is so we could also roam around, socialise, and experience what other businesses offer during the event such as freebies, free tasting, and etc. The last day was memorable too because I was asked by the Brand Events cameraman to face the camera and do the introduction to the V.I.P. suite (I just simply said in front of the camera, “Hi. Welcome to the Brown Thomas V.I.P. suite). I think the video will be used for the future media pack or promotions of the next year’s Taste of Dublin event. It was nerve-racking but it all went well.
I would like to thank Portobello Institute especially Cait Barden (Portobello Institute’s Course Director) for this rare-opportunity. Not just I had fun but I learned a lot of new things specifically on a Marketing and Business Administration perspective through observation how the organisers co-ordinates and manages such a huge successful event like Taste of Dublin.
