Who is this programme for?

The BIFM level 3 qualification is aimed at those starting out on the career and knowledge path of FM. This programme is also suitable for first-line managers and supervisors seeking to develop their skills and gain a recognised FM qualification.

Practical assessment tasks that are work-based, reflecting live business projects and activities are the core assessment techniques used for this qualification.

Entry Requirements

No previous FM experience required.

Class Sizes

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello.  To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Many of our students tell us of the lifelong friendships they have made during their study time with Portobello.

Student success stories

Linda Jennings shares per story. I first learned about Facilities when I did 2 weeks work experience in the facilities department of a bank when I was 16 and I loved it. When I finished school I returned to the same bank to work in the facilities department as a facilities assistant and from there progressed onto to work as facilities coordinator. I spent some time travelling for a number of years and when I returned home I was lucky enough to be asked to work as facilities coordinator in another bank from a previous contact.
After one year in that position, I was asked to assist setting up a new facilities helpdesk for an outsourced facilities company who had just been awarded a huge contract in Ireland. Once the helpdesk was set up I stayed on as the supervisor and remained in this position for over 10 years until 2017.Having loved every role I had throughout the years I never felt the need to study. With a family of my own it was difficult to find extra time but as the kids got older it became easier.

I chose to study Facilities Management at Portobello Institute to gain a better understanding of all areas involved within facilities.
I found the course extremely beneficial. As every module was covered, I found my day to day job becoming easier. I was more confident in my decision making and my advice and I felt I could engage more in regular meetings I had to attend. Read full story here

Course Structure

The BIFM level 3 programme is available to study through part-time tuition. It is delivered over evening and day sessions. There is an induction Workshop, held on an evening prior to the start of the programme.  The programme runs all year, with a break in the month of December, and classes are scaled back to generally 1 full day session during the months of July and August.

Life Cycle, cost analysis, value engineering, security preparedness; these are only a few of the range of facilities issues confronting many organisations today. The BIFM level 3 qualification introduces the participant to the concepts of facilities management, developing the learners ability to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to facilitate the competent completion of tasks and addressing of problems. It takes approx 9-10 months to complete the course. Progression

Students can progress their studies in FM or complement their qualifications with energy and waste management qualifications. All of these programmes are available through the CME. BIFM Level 4 in Facilities Management CME Level 1 Certificate in Energy Management CME Level 1 Certificate in Waste Management
