The Health Care Services certificate with an emphasis on Occupational Therapy assistant provides training for Care Assistants and Occupational Therapy assistants and equips them with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. Students gain a knowledge of the theory and principles of occupational therapy practice, and of the role of the occupational therapy assistant in the implementation of therapeutic programmes. Students learn about human occupation, growth and development and become familiar with the elements of activities of living. They develop the skills and techniques to assist a patient/client in the activities of living in order to enhance their quality of life. The Occupational Therapy Assistant also learns the basic principles of infection control and are taught to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control.

Occupational therapists help people who have problems with their physical or mental health. Their aim is to maximise their clients independence at home and with their working and social lives. They assess needs, and plan and carry out activities that help people to look after themselves.

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

Class Sizes

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello.  To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Many of our students tell us of the lifelong friendships they have made during their study time with Portobello.

Course Structure

This is a part time course. Delivery is by blended learning with a combination of distance learning modules and modules delivered by attending part time classes for duration as listed in the dates given. Learners can start this blended learning programme at any stage by starting their distance learning modules.  Students are also required to complete day workshops, usually held on a Sat and run approx 1 per month. Learners must complete 100 hours work experience to complete the course and must secure this placement themselves
