This course will qualify the learner to become a “therapeutic play practitioner” where the focus of their work will be to understand child development from a therapeutic perspective. They will be able to provide suitable therapeutic interventions in accordance with their knowledge and scope of the role of the therapeutic play practitioner in relation to; general adjustment issues, attachment issues, mild challenging behaviour, and low self-esteem issues.
This course is suitable for those already working with children in a variety of areas such as:
• Early Childcare and Education settings-pre-school teachers or practitioners
• Schools-teachers, resource teacher or Special Needs Assistants
• Hospitals-nurses or carers
• Child Minders
• Au Pairs
This course also provides students with an invaluable foundation to further develop their careers and become qualified “Play Therapists”.
This course provides for the full and effective implementation of all four themes of the Aistear curriculum framework and the SPHE curriculum from a therapeutic perspective. Thus, providing greater opportunity for helping our children to learn to cope with issues that may affect them in their lives. This therapeutic perspective is evidence based and has been shown to provide positive improvements in children’s behaviour, self-esteem and general adjustment issues.

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello. To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Many of our students tell us of the lifelong friendships they have made during their study time with Portobello.

• Therapeutic Play and its benefits,
• The nature and types of issues that children experience and how therapeutic play can help them
• The skills and techniques required to become a therapeutic play practitioner/play specialist.
• The different creative mediums that can be used in therapeutic play interventions such as Sand play, Clay, Art, Music, Lego, Water and Therapeutic Story telling.

Yifa McDonald -After finishing my masters in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy studies I felt very comfortable with the theory side of things but not as confident on the practical side. Because I work mainly with children I decided to look for a play therapy course that will provide me with additional practical tools and also with a deeper understanding of the different processes that children goes through while participating in play therapy. The play therapy course in the Portobello Institute led by Dr Meera Oke provided me with exactly that. During the course I have experienced and worked with different materials, learnt new techniques and was exposed to new approaches. When working in my setting I was able to pick up on things that would of been normally lost because of the knowledge I gained from this course.I found the course extremely practical and very hands on, I was able to implemented something from the it each week into my own classroom, and see the benefit in the children. It was just small changes, but made so much of an effect on the children and my teaching. One thing that really helped me was mirroring what the child says instead of bombarding them with questions they don't know the answer to. lt took the pressure off both the children and me.
