What our students have to say...

Orla Corrigan - Accepted onto University Limerick's (UL) MSc in Speech and Language Therapy Masters Programme

"Five years ago, I completed my undergraduate degree in Languages for International  Communication in DCU. Since then, I have been working in a customer facing role in a global semiconductor company. Although I learned a lot during this time, I realised this sector is not where my passion lies.
I have always enjoyed working with people, both young and old, and somehow came up with the idea that a job in speech and language therapy might be something that I would enjoy.
I applied to the MSc in Speech and Language Therapy in UL but unfortunately I was unsuccessful with my initial application so I went about researching courses in the sector.

I researched a lot of courses at the time finally settling on Portobello’s programme as it included a work experience module of 100 hours. Work experience is near to impossible to arrange privately in this sector but Portobello were able to arrange for me to undertake work experience in St. James’s Hospital Speech and Language Therapy Department. This was fantastic experience which allowed me to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real life settings. I was also able to arrange further work experience with a private company “Spectrum Health”, based on the fact that I was enrolled on the programme in Portobello Institute.

I found the course itself great, there was more work involved than I had initially thought there would be but the tutor was excellent, well prepared and very knowledgeable. She was also very encouraging in relation to all the students future plans in the field and gave insight and advice based on her own personal experiences.

Now that I am nearing the end of this course I realise that I gained a lot more than I had planned. As a result of doing this course I have finally been accepted onto the MSc Speech and Language Therapy Masters programme in UL and feel I am going into it with a brilliant understanding of the topic. I also now know this is 100% the area that I want to pursue".

Roisin Rooney - Accepted onto Queen Margaret Uni's Speech and Language Degree Programme

" My interest in this area began whilst studying my final year in Arts in NUIG when it was spoken about at a careers seminar. I started to apply to various postgraduate and undergraduate courses both here and in the UK but after two years of failed attempts I looked at alternative routes and found this course (the only FETAC one I could find!)
I loved this course from the very start, the tutor is a trained speech and language therapist so the information obtained was very relevant and interesting and she was great at helping us with queries or questions we had on the coursework and going through our assignment briefs.
The classes are kept small making it easier to form friendships and share ideas and opinions on the subject matter.
I am delighted to say I have recently been accepted into Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh on their undergraduate Speech and Language Therapy programme. I have no doubt in my mind that after two years of failed attempts prior to enrolling with Portobello Institute this course has helped hugely in securing my place with them. The additional 100 hours of work placement required as part of Portobello’s course is also very admirable to future employers and lecturers.
I am excited for my new career path and my future. This course has cemented the fact that I am now more interested in the area of speech and language therapy than I ever was."
