The Applied Social Studies course is designed to introduce students to the area of sociology and applied social studies, and to develop their understanding and awareness of social issues in their own lives and society in general. Students develop basic research skills and learn to recognise the complexity of social issues.

Social workers work with individuals, families and groups experiencing social and emotional difficulties. Their aim is to help people achieve change and make decisions that will improve their quality of life.

During the Applied Social Studies course, students will be guided through a range of psychological theories, which have relevance to their own lives and to the understanding of work practice. These psychological perspectives provide a basis for understanding interpersonal behaviour and the link between social work theory and practice will be emphasised. Students explore, reflect and analyze equality and diversity of people and their rights and responsibilities providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary for active, positive participation in a complex, diverse and rapidly changing society.

Entry requirement

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. Acceptance to Full Time courses is interview based, there are no specific points requirements.
