This Special Effects Make Up course is specifically designed for the already established make up artist looking to upskill into an alternative area of make up. The Irish film industry has seen an explosion in the last number of years thus bringing a demand for highly trained artists. This course is specifically tailored and taught by working make up artists within the TV/film industry; making it full of the latest theory and practical hands on experience of both products and techniques needed on set.

Upon completion of this course students will have learned;

- the application of various casualty effects

- basic creation, application and removal of prosthetics

- the use of bald caps

- the application and technique used for postiche hair pieces and loose hair

- character design, creation and application

- covering and creating tattoos

- application, blending and removal of specialist SFX products - adhesives, colourants and cleansers

- the breaking of scrips, understanding continuity, working to a budget, the importance of working with hair and costume departments and working with industry time contraints

Qualifications gained

  • Itec diploma in Special Effects (Unit 41 & 42)

Entry Requirements

Entry is by direct application to the college. Students must hold a previous ITEC award in Make up; ITEC High Fashion & Media Make up or similar from another college.

Class Sizes

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello.  To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Course Structure

Runs 1 evening per week. This course makes up Semester 2 of the full ITEC Fashion Theatre Media Make Up Course - for those that do not hold the required entry requirements can complete Semesters 1 & 2 together, see here for details.

Course Overview

  • Casualty effects- scratches, grazes, open wounds, open wounds, bruising, scarring, missing teeth, death effects, torn and ruptured skin, missing fingers, open fractures, infections, diseases and disorders of the skin, skin texturing, veining, bullet wounds, stab wounds, 1st - 3rd degree burns and frost bite
  • Bald caps- the creation, application, colouring and removal of glatzan and latex bald caps
  • False Hair Application- laying on of loose hair, facial hair, eyebrows, moustache and side burns
  • Prosthetics - the creation, application, colouring and removal of latex, gelatine and silicone prosthetics
  • Application and removal of - wax/putty to alter features/block out eyebrows, creating temporary tattoos and covering tattoos, ageing of the face and body with latex and make up
  • Character creation- the complete process of character creation including design, application and removal
  • Skin condition check- infestations, congenital, bacterial, viral, fungal, pigmentation disorders, general disorders and common ailments
