Our Airline Studies students took a trip to the National Museum of Ireland last week as part of their Tourism Awareness module.  Steeped in culture the National Museum of Ireland houses collections which tell the story of Irelands Heritage and History throughout the years.  As well as the decorative arts collections there is also natural collections of animals from Ireland and overseas.  This visit was a unique experience for some of our students for whom Ireland is not their native country.

Portobello Institute has been successfully delivering an Environmental Impact Assessment programme with credibile results for the past two years.  In line with this course the Institute will deliver a 1 Day workshop on EIA Practice for Quarry Development Applications on 22nd August.

An essential part of any full time course at Portobello Institute is to undertake a work placement. This is when our students get the opportunity to put theory into practice in a real life work sitation.  It also gives the student the ideal platform in which to network amongst potential future employers. 

A date in the diary for those working in Facilities Management - Think FM is taking place on 18th June at the Royal College of Physicians in Central London.  Brought to you by BIFM, this year one third of the programme is dedicated to People Management related topics.  This is the ideal conference for those who are managing a team or managing customer expectations.  Topics range from collobaration to Social Media exposure, taking in in calculating the cost of employment and food for an inspired workplace. 

If you are part of the FAS Work Placement Programme or the Jobbridge Programme then this could be the internship for you.  Start Mortgages is a specialist lender based in Clonskeagh, Dublin 4 are offering two intern positions for those interested in pursuing a career as a Legal Secretary.  The successful candidate will work in our Litigation Team and will provide legal secretarial support to a team of solicitors.  Both interns will report to the Litigation Manager.

Portobello Institute have been successfully running A Facilities Management Level 5 which is accredited by the British Institute of Facilities Management.  This part-time course has previously run 1 evening a week, however due to demand the college will now offer this popular programme on block release commencing in May.  The BIFM programme which is aimed at those with middle management and/or those with experience in a supervisiory role within FM aims to provide the learner with skills in risk management, an understanding of Global FM trends, financial management and strategic planning.

As part of their full time Legal Studies programme our students are due to visit the Four Courts and the Criminal Courts of Justice next week.  This is a fantastic opporunity for our students to see first hand law and practice being implemented in terms of defence and case, legistaltion and the professional conduct that goes hand in hand with this environment.  Allan Crann who delivers the full time Legal Studies programme is a practising barrister at the Four Courts and he believes the court visit plays a vital role within the programme as students get to see theory in practice and expeirence the format and structure of an active working court. 

As part of their Travel and Tourism programme some of our full time students embarked on aTourism Awareness field trip taking in the famous landmarks of Dublin city.  The students took a stroll around Dublin viewing the city through the eyes of a tourist.

Following on from fantastic feedback from last years Travel & Tourism students the Northern Ireland Tourist board will once more deliver a guest lecture to our students.  Elyena O Kane of NITB was extremely impressed with the calibre of students from Portobello Institute who showed immense interest in her presentation and the industry as a whole and is more than happy to present to our current students who are undertaking the part-time Travel Agency practice programme on 16th November 2011.  Guest lectures of this nature play a pivotal role in educating our students as they add depth to their learning experience and gives them exposure to industry specialists and networking opportunities.

After all the hard work and hours of study and dedication our full and part-time students from 2010 graduated at the Concert Hall, RDS.  Over 200 students attended on the day to receive their well deserved Diplomas which will lead them onto the first step of their career ladders in their chosen sectors.

The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) Ireland Region in Association with the BIFM Ireland Conference have officially launched a new award to recognise and organisation that has made an outstanding and valuable contribution to the FM Industry in Ireland.  Entries were welcome from all organisations which has contributed to the workplace services within the industry such as construction, catering, security, cleaning, maintenance, IT or Health & Safety.  The winner which will be announced at the 2011 BIFM Ireland Conference on 4th November will be awarded for their outstanding performance within Ireland in the last 12 months and be an Advocate of Facilities and Property Management as a service and/or profession.  Entries have come from both private, public and voluntary sectors.

If you are currently working within Facilities Management then this is a date for your diary not to be missed.  On 10th October the Grosvenor House Hotel, London will play host to the BIFM Awards 2011 where over 1200 senior figures from the FM industry will attend, 80% of whom will be director level and senior management.  This is the biggest and most influential  networking event within the FM industry celebrating FM and the role it plays in both the public and private sector.  On the day there will be various awards given from FM Excellence in a Major Project through to Facilities Manager of the Year.  The deadline for FM of the year is on 15th July so all entries must be received by Friday. 

Portobello Institute are delighted to announce the appointment of new ebusiness and Internet Marketing tutor Eoghan O'Sullivan.  Eoghan comes with a wealth of experience in this field and we are excited to have him on board, and for our students to gain a real insight into the fast paced sector of ebusiness and Internet Marketing.

Portobello Institute are excited to execute their first Fire Legislation workshop which is CDP approved by Engineers Ireland tomorrow, 16th September. We are fortunate to have industry expert Michael Lyons delivering this workshop.  Michael Lyons is a Chartered Engineer and a member of Engineers Ireland.  He has vast amounts of experience in this area having worked as a Fire Safety consultant and consulting engineer since 2000, and Portobello Institute are honoured to have him on-board for this specific workshop. 

As part of her Legal Studies programme Adhel Teepoo undertook a visit to Dublins Four Courts earlier this year.  During her time spent at Portobello Institute Adhel was tutored by Allan Crann.  Adhel says "The overall experience at the Four Courts was fantastic.  Allan our tutor showed us a lot of other things as well as a history about the Four Courts.  The visit has improved my ability to understand and experience another world within Law and the use of Law.  Certainly this gave me a moral boost and encouragement to continue to study law at a higher level.  My lectures with Allan were always extremely interesting"

Portobello Institute are excited to announce the launch of their new BIFM accredited Facilities Management course which commences on 23rd June, the same day as World FM takes place.  World FM is a Global FM initiative to celebrate the importance of the FM profession.  It aims to raise the FM profile around the globe, promoting facilities management's ideal. 

Portobello Institute Travel and Tourism graduates are excited about the arising opportunites with Travelport GDS.  The company are currently recruiting for the positions in supplier support roles covering Europe, Middle East and Africa providing support to Hertz Hilton directly through their support system or by phone.  Gallileo qualified students and past students Airline students are prime candidates for these roles.  The main requirements are 1G/1V professional experience which Portobello Institute provided through our training.  Successful applicants will then receive further training by Travelport in Supply support.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our graduates to kick start their career in Travel and Tourism.

We have some exciting announcements to our FM Tutor team.  Collectively they have outstanding experience in their field and will pass on their empowered knowledge to our students aiding them in their future careers.

We are always very pleased when our students successfully gain employment in thier chosen sector after studying with us.  Most recently Airlines student Igor Melnik secured a role with Irelands low cost airline Ryanair.  This is a fantastic appointment for Igor who always wanted to work as an Airline steward.  Igor was guided by his expert tutors who collectively pass on a wealth of knowledge in this sector. Igor says "I am really happy to secure this role as it is my first step to the future working in the Aviation industry.  I am not so happy as I have to relocate to Bristol and leave all my friends behind but this is a fantastic opportunity".

Portobello Institute are pleased to announce the launch of their new Facilities Management ILM accredited course which starts on 22nd June.  Portobello are the first education centre in Europe to be accredited by ILM so this a fantastic opportunity for the college to offer learners a Level 3 qualification with this UK body.  ILM are the largest awarding organisation for qualifications in leadership, management coaching and enterprise.  Formed in 2001 as a merger outcome from NEBS Management and the Institute of Supervisory Management, ILM have since become the leading partner in a new pan-sector authority replacing the Management Standards Centre.  Their role is to advise on standards in leadership, management and enterprise across all industry sectors.  ILM customers include household names such as Carphone Warehouse, Aviva, Thomas Cook and  Cadbury to name a few.  The ILM say " Our qualifications and services are recognised and respected by employers and training organisations worldwide".  Portobello Institute look forward to a long and fruitful working relationship with ILM.

The Dragons Den particpants from Portobello Institute 'Full Time Business Management' programme arrived armoured with great idieas today.  Acting as Dragons for the day, Kimberley Dunne Fleming and Cait Barden commented that some of the ideas were current and innovative and they parted with over €160,000 between them for equity in 3 of the businesses.  3 other businesses showed great potential.  Ideas were mooted for the car servicing industry (Conan Murray), Mobile Marketing (Joy Isabel Villaneuva, Nutrional Products (Steven Wijntjes), Beauty Services (Zolzaya Sodnomdarjaa), Cupcake Company (Sinead Fanning), Italian Food Business (Bolortungalag Erdene), Clothing and Styling Business (Zubia Azfal), and Tourism Product ( Ciara McCarthy).  Learners are now equiped to present their business plans to Angel investors, Enterprise Ireland, Enterprise Borads as a result of 12 weeks learning inthe module business planning -  a useful exercise for any wannabe entrepreneur.

Croke Park is the 4th largest sports stadium in Europe with a 82,300 capicity.  The role of the Operations Manager is key within an organisation of this size to ensure the daily operations and logistics are performed to the best standard.  Allan Gallagher, Operations Manager for the infamous Croke Park statium took time out of his hectic and demanding role to deliver a guest lecture to our Facilities Management students.  Allan delivered a fantastic presentation which outlined the definitive role of Operations wtihin a large ogranisation.  Over the years the stadium has housed numerous events from Sports - Heineken Cup, Irish Rugby and Soccer Internationals from 2007 to 2009, through to coporate events and Music concerts such as Robbie Williams, U2, Bon Jovi and Tina Turner to name just a few.  Allans main role is to produce products and services in an efficient and effective way.  In addition to being responsible for the day to day runnings of the stadium Allan is also involved in Project Management, PR, Budget Control, Event Planning and liaising with internal and external stake holders.  This aim is to help join the 'theory' to 'practice' dots.  Allan finised the presentation by highlighting the key traits for a Facilities Manager;

As the first point of contact for customers Airline staff should be impeccably groomed at all times from their hair and makeup through to their uniform.  Make up expert Danielle Murphy popped into the college in April to speak to our Airline students about presentaion and grooming in the work place.  Danielle had vast amounts of experience to pass on to the students in this area.  A professional make-up artist with the Gemma Kidd shcool of Make up Artistry in London and a background in the Airline industry Danielle knows exactly the standards required in this fast paced and exciting sector.

The Airline students will embarke on a field trip to the National Museum of Ireland on 19th April as part of their Travel and Tourism studies.  Steepd in Irish heritage the purpose of the trip is embrace Irish culture and heritage at its best.  The students will visit the Decorative Arts and History part of the museum at Collins Barracks which houses Irish haute couture garnements focusing on fashions throughout the years, furniture, silver, jewellery, ceramics and exhibitions exploring Irish Military history.  The purpose of this field trips is:

We are delighted to annouce the appointment of Colman Murphy as lecturer on the ILM FM Programme.  Colman has worked in Property Project and Facilities Management for nearly twenty years.  He has recently joined Xtra-vision as Senior Projects and Property Manager.  Currently he is working on changing the Standard Store Design and Standard Store Approval Process and on the maintainence process, changing to a sustainable condition based monitioring and preventative maintainence model.  He is actively involved in Upward Only Rent Review (UORR) respective legislation.

Portobello Institute are delighted to announce that Accountancy student Deirdre O'Keefe has come joint second in Ireland in Paper 4 of the CAT Programme and 14th Worldwide.  This is a fantastic achievement for Deirdre and her tutors are extremly proud of her and the high level of result achieved.

Setting up a business can be a tough but rewarding project to undertake.  Planning and management is key so with this in mind the Business management students have been set a project to put together a profitable and new and innovative business idea.  On 12th May Portobello Institute will host their own verion of the popular hit TV show Dragons Den.  Eaach student must prepare and pitch an idea to our own selected 'Dragons' - head of the business department Cait Barden, Tutor Kimberley Dume Fleming and a nominated student.  Each Dragon has €100,000 to invest.

As part of their programme our Business students undertook a visit to the Four Courts in Dublin City centre this week.  Our tutors are firm believers in field trips of this nature as it enhances the student learning experience and provides the student with real life experiences in thier field.

Portobello Institutes Legal Studies students are excited abouth the CPD scholarships available through CPD Seminars.  They are offering scholarships on the Accredited Mediation Training  taking place throughout April.  CPD Seminars is one of Ireland's most established training bodies in Mediation and ADR, offering Continuing Professional Development in these domains.  The successful completion of the foundation and advanced courses will accredit the entrants with Mediation Forum Ireland and will enable them to pracice asan Accredited Mediator.  There are a total of eight places tobe won, two from each categroy.

Portobello Institute ACCA CAT students are delighted to apply for the role of a part qualified accountant with AFR. Neill O' Sullivan, Head of Fund Development for the Community Foundation Ireland www.foundation.ie delivered a guest lecture to Business Management students http://www.portobelloinstitute.ie/business/business-courses/tag/Course%20Type-Full%20Time on 10th March.  The Community Foundation seeks to inspire donors and support charities and community groups.  Established in 2000 they have made grants on behalf of donors of over €6milllion, mostly in Ireland.  Niall joined the company as head of fund development in 2006.  He has many years in the fundraising and not for profit sector and initially worked with Oxfam Ireland before joining an international fundraising consultancy firm, working with clients organisations in Ireland, Britian and USA.  From 2001 to 2006 he ran his own consultancy firm.  During this time he completed projects for many of Ireland's leading Irish schools, hospitals and charities.  At the foundation Niall works with donors and professional advisors in all areas of philanthropy.

 Following on from the success of its part-time programme, Portobello Institute are now offereing an intensive Environmental Impact System progamme which is delivered over six days.  The programme is designed to provide a critical overview of the theory and practice of EIA as operated within Ireland and under International legistlation.  On completition the learner will have a thorough understanding of EIA and how to manage and oversea the creation of EIA.  It will also allow assessors of completed EIA's to make sure they comply with the EU regulations and will give them an understanding of benchmark standards the reports should be working too.  The programme is delivered as follows:

The emarketing students came to the end of the course in March and to finalize their programme they received a guest lecture from Myra Hayes who is a producer of the Sunday Businesss Show on Today FM, Irelands leading Business show. Myra focused on the area of podcasting, radio advertising and online presence.  Myra has years of experinece within Radio and gave the students a real insight into the power of Radio Advertising for brands.  Myra focused heavily on podcasting and the advantages for brands to have a strong on line presence in todays market.  Podcasing gives the listener the control of when and what they want to listen to.  The Sunday Business Show on Today FM offers the listener the lastest financial and political news and interview and is hosted by Connall O'Morain and Anton Savage.

It is essential to keep up to date with current changes and movement within your chosen sector so this month the Facilities Management students attended the Facilities Management Ireland exhibition and conference at the RDS on the 9th and 10th March 2011.  The two day event played host to a wealth of industry experts who delivered guest lectures to the attendee's.  The lectures covered a number of areas across the board of FM from Health and Safetly to Project Management and Security.  The feedback from our FM students was fantastic.  Exposure to such events and industry knowledge provides an ideal platfrom from which to base their career and expand within this sector.  FM is about more than bricks and mortar.  It is about providing safe, effective, sustainable workgin environments that increase efficiency and motivate staff.  It is the second highest cost to most businesses.  With over 75 exhibitors over the weekend students were able to gather information in many of the component areas such as Energy saving, Asset management, Procurment, Technology and Legislation.

Linda Hausmanis, Head of Qualifications for the British Institute of Facilities Management delivered a guest leacture to Portobello's FM students on 23rd February.  The BIFM is one of the leading professional bodies for Facilities Mangement worldwide with their mission statement being "to advance the FM profession."  Facilities Management is the intergration of processess in an organization to maintain and develop the agreed services which support and improve the effectivness of its primary activities. On a day to day level effective facilities management provides a safe and efficient working environment, which is essential to the performance of any business.

 Business students from Portobello Institute have been invited to attend the Project Management Institutes EMEA Congress which will be held in Dublin from 9th to 11th May.  The conference which takes place at the Convention Centre in the City Centre will have a dedicated day to students on the 9th May. In the lead up to the event students are asked to submit white papers on their chosen research topic.  PMI will review all papers submitted and chose three white papers which will be given an area in the conference exhibit in which to demonstrate as well as present the paper during the day.

Gavin Hesse presented a guest lecture to the Internet Marketing students on 14th February which received excellent feedback from the students who attended.  Gavin had a wealth of experience to talk to pass on the students.  He has worked at the Display Division Right Media, which is the display Yahoo Media as an account manger for the UK team, delivering 1.5 billion clicks a day, competing with Platform A, Google Content Network, Solutions included 'Behavioural  Targeting' or 'Direct Responses'.  He currenly sells Business Intelligence software with the enterprise division in SAP and works part-time in the online space for websites (re) build, optimistaion and online revenue streams.  He studied Business Management in University College Cork and completed DEUG in Lyon, France in Science Politiques.  He is passionate about the interest
