Welcome to the Creative Courses Department

Welcome to Portobello Institute Creative Courses Department. Included in this department are our Fashion Courses, Interior Design and Make Up Artist courses.

This year we are excited to add an array of exciting new courses to this department's portfolio, namely; Editorial and Fashion Hair, Fashion Make Up, Theatrical Performance, Performing Arts and Theatre Production.

There are various study options available within this department. So whether you are studying for a career change or simply upskilling an existing qualification there's a course here for you.

Go to our Gallery and check out some of our previous students work; some of our students have gone on to work with the biggest names in the industry like  MAC, Vera Wang and New Look to name a few while others have gone on to set up their own companies.

Field trips are an integral part of all our Fashion and Make Up Artist courses and we encourage all students to try and attend as many as possible.

Fashion Design Advanced Certificate Full time

The Fashion Design course is a 2 year course focusing on the core elements of design from drawing through to communication and computer illustration, providing a great introduction to the world of fashion. Students will learn the fundamental day to day operations of fashion design encompassing fabric selection, design process and arts and crafts.

Fashion Management Certificate Full time

Fashion is a multi-billion euro global industry offering a range of career options for creative individuals with a flair for design. However, as fashion becomes more and more corporate driven, there is an increased need for professionals who are aware of the business climate of this industry and understand the mechanics behind it.

Fashion Management Diploma Full time

The rapid expansion of the fashion industry internationally has created a demand for highly skilled managers and executives educated with a particular understanding of the needs of fashion businesses. Year two of Portobello Institute’s Fashion Management programmes course develops graduates who can respond to these needs. This course is presented as a Business Management programme from a fashion perspective, covering all the essential elements necessary to groom graduates for management positions within the fashion industry, from value to high-end markets.

Costume Design Advanced Certificate Full time

The Costume Design course is a full time 2 year advanced certificate course that introduces the learner to the practical and technical foundation skills required of a modern Costume Designer in theatre, TV and film.

Millinery Design Certificate Full time

On the Millinery course students will learn the technical skills for blocking and shaping straw and felt hats, as well as learning how to plan and make basic patterns for fabric hats. Milliners design and create hats; they work with a wide variety of materials from straw and paper to velvets and silks. Millinery is a highly skilled craft requiring a steady hand, attention to detail and precise working.

Fashion Buying & Merchandising Certificate Part time

In their advisory role to designers and retailers, fashion merchandisers are required to constantly keep their fingers to the pulse of one of the world's fastest moving industries. By tracking and analysing market trends it is their job to recommend to their employers the next direction to take in line with upcoming style shifts. As a fashion buyer your job will be to attend shows held in the fashion capitals of the world, forecast trends, buy the right clothes at the right time, whilst at the same time always ensuring profits and growth for the company.

Fashion Marketing Part time

Fashion Marketing is the business that moves the world's fashions from designers' showrooms to the retail floor and into the hands of consumers. This Fashion Marketing course will prepare students for a career in the retail and wholesale fashion industry. Students will understand the role of fashion media as an important tool of communication, identifying the main channels of fashion media and the most effective promotional mix for a specific line of merchandise. Focusing on behind-the-scenes operations, students learn the importance of planning, branding, marketing, advertising and public relations in the fashion industry.

Fashion Design Part time

The part time Fashion Design course introduces the principles of the fashion design process from concept to the finished product. Students will explore visual research, developing ideas into creative and innovative fashion designs.

Garment Construction Part time

The Garment Construction course will allow you to gain skills in the practical element of garment assembly through knowledge of materials, techniques and the processes involved to create commercially viable and well constructed designs.

Millinery Design Certificate Part time

Milliners design and create hats, they work with a wide variety of materials from straw and paper to velvets and silks. Millinery is a highly skilled craft requiring a steady hand, attention to detail and precise working. The work of the Milliner extends to other forms of fashionable head wear. The Milliner needs to have a good knowledge of fashion trends and an excellent understanding of fabrics, design and shape is also important.

Portobello Make Up Artist Part time

The Portobello Make Up Artist course covers the ITEC syllabus for Facial Make Up and modules 1 and 2 of the Fashion, Theatre and Media Make Up course, omitting Special Effects. The ITEC exam is optional.

The Fashion Theatre and Media Make Up course is exclusively tailored to cover every aspect of Fashion, Theatre, TV, Film and Special Effects Make Up. The addition of the Special Effects module provides you with the ability to work in specialised areas of theatre, TV, and film.

Facial Make Up Part time

ITEC created this Make Up course for those working in salons, pharmacies or for those seeking a qualification to complement a beauty qualification.

Special Effects Make Up – 1 Week Course

The Special Effects Make Up course is specially designed for the already established Make Up artist looking to upskill into an alternative area of Make Up. The course will start at beginner level and run through all the products, ingredients and materials used within today’s Special FX industry. You will meet a variety of highly trained Special FX tutors who are actively working professionally within the TV and Film Industry.

Hair Styling for Fashion, Bridal & Editorial – 1 Week

The Hair Styling course offers intensive training in hair styling for the camera such as fashion events, editorial photoshoots and weddings. Students who take this course typically have no experience in hair or may already have some experience and wish to refresh their skill base.

Introduction to Hat Making - 1 Week Course

The Introduction to Hat Making course is a 1 week course that introduces the learner to the foundations required for hat making and design. You will learn to work with a wide variety of materials and shapes creating hats and head pieces. This highly skilled millinery craft requires a steady hand and attention to detail. You will explore a wide range of media and materials and experiment with these to produce a variety of hat designs. Learners should have a good knowledge of fashion trends and an excellent understanding of fabrics, design and shape.

Make Up Masterclass

Learn to apply your make up perfectly and look your best for the coming months. This 3 hour masterclass gives you a real insight into make up application and shows you how to enhance your features.   It is suitable for anyone looking to improve their personal make up techniques or for those looking to get a "taste" of the industry.

Fashion Design - 8 Day Course

This intensive Fashion Design course is held over 8 days. You will work from a set brief to research and develop ideas for fashion garments. There will be workshops in figure drawing and illustration and talks on marketing and collection structure. You will learn the basics of Fashion Design including inspiration, research, developing your ideas and portfolio presentation. You will be introduced to different fabrics exploring their suitability and function within fashion garments. The short Fashion Design course is suitable for beginners as well as those with some previous experience.

Airbrushing - 2 Day Course

The Airbrushing course is designed for already practicing Make Up Artists looking to sharpen their skills in an ever competitive market. You'll learn to use an airbrush to achieve flawless blending, contouring and creative colouring techniques. These can then be applied to your specialised field - from fashion, to HD film/TV or prosthetics.

Fashion Accessory Design - 2 Day Course

Do you have a creative eye and wish to learn basis skills in accessory design and making?  The Fashion Accessory Design course is suitable for someone who is looking to complement their fashion design studies or those who are new to the area and want to explore textiles and accessories. No previous sewing or pattern experience is required. There will be an emphasis on recycled material and fastenings, using textile stores, second hand shops and markets throughout Dublin.

Fascinators (Millinery) - 1 Day Course

Fascinators are fast becoming the popular alternative to formal hats. The 1 day Fascinator course is ideal for those who are looking to explore accessory design, or for those who wish to design and make their own head piece for any occasion. The Fascinator course introduces you to the skills and techniques involved in producing elegant fascinator designs. You will explore various fabric and trimming options from feathers, ribbons and netting, adapting them to your design. This course caters for all abilities from beginners through to experienced sewers.

Interior Design Part time

Portobello Institute's Interior Design course has been designed with the help of professional interior designers and architects and focusses on Residential Interior Design.

The interior design course will provide you with a solid understanding of all the key features of interior design - colour mixing, texture, 3D effects, materials, lighting, space planning, drafting and includes a portfolio presentation using the work you complete during the course year.
