Welcome to the Creative Courses Department

Welcome to Portobello Institute Creative Courses Department. Included in this department are our Fashion Courses, Interior Design and Make Up Artist courses.

This year we are excited to add an array of exciting new courses to this department's portfolio, namely; Editorial and Fashion Hair, Fashion Make Up.

There are various study options available within this department. So whether you are studying for a career change or simply upskilling an existing qualification there's a course here for you.

Go to our Gallery and check out some of our previous students work; some of our students have gone on to work with the biggest names in the industry like  MAC, Vera Wang and New Look to name a few while others have gone on to set up their own companies.

Field trips are an integral part of all our Fashion and Make Up Artist courses and we encourage all students to try and attend as many as possible.

Fashion Buying & Merchandising - Full time Year 1

The Fashion Buying and Merchandising course is an introductory fashion buying course encompassing the foundations that are necessary to succeed as a fashion buyer in today's competitive environment.

Fashion Buying & Merchandising- Full time Year 2

The Fashion Buying & Merchandising course (advanced certificate) covers a concise range of modules ensuring students gain a practical insight into the world of fashion buying and merchandising.

Fashion Design - Full time 2 Yr Programme

The Fashion Design course is a 2 year course focusing on the core elements of design from drawing through to communication and computer illustration, providing a great introduction to the world of fashion. Students will learn the fundamental day to day operations of fashion design encompassing fabric selection, design process and arts and crafts.

Fashion Management - Full time Year 1

Fashion is a multi-billion euro global industry offering a range of career options for creative individuals with a flair for design. However, as fashion becomes more and more corporate driven, there is an increased need for professionals who are aware of the business climate of this industry and understand the mechanics behind it.

Fashion Management Diploma Full time

The rapid expansion of the fashion industry internationally has created a demand for highly skilled managers and executives educated with a particular understanding of the needs of fashion businesses. Year two of Portobello Institute’s Fashion Management programmes course develops graduates who can respond to these needs. This course is presented as a Business Management programme from a fashion perspective, covering all the essential elements necessary to groom graduates for management positions within the fashion industry, from value to high-end markets.

Fashion Profiles & Marketing. Part time

This short part-time Fashion Profiles & Marketing course is part of our popular Fashion Buying & Merchandising course. Once complete you can choose to progress onto the Fashion Trends & Buying Calendar Module or the Visual Retail Display module.  All modules married together make up the complete Fashion Buying & Merchandising course which sets the foundations for a successful career in either Fashion Buying or Merchandising within the fast paced retail sector.

Fashion Trends & Buying Calendar. Part time

This short part-time course is part of our popular Fashion Buying & Merchandising course. Once complete you can choose to progress onto the Fashion Profiles & Marketing Module or the Visual Retail Display module.  All modules married together make up the complete Fashion Buying & Merchandising course which sets the foundations for a successful career in either Fashion Buying or Merchandising within the fast paced retail sector.

Fashion Styling - Full Time 2 Months

The purpose of the Fashion Styling course is to equip the learner with the knowledge and skills required to work as a stylist in a broad range of areas such as personal styling, photo shoot styling and fashion show styling. Learners will master the skills of working from a brief for specific markets, being able to interpret and respond to the clients needs,  while working with other creatives: Photographer, Model, Hair and Makeup both verbally and visually in a professional manner.

Fashion and Media Makeup - Short Intensive

The intenstive Fashion and Media Make Up course will equip learners with the creative and technical skills necessary to succeed in all aspects of makeup within Fashion, Film, Retail and Media.  The learner will develop not only creative and practical skills but also the professional skills required to work in the above industries. The course focuses on makeup application for a range of skin colours and tones, makeup application for TV, Film and print. The learner will also develop skill in plan and design for a fashion show or fashion shoot, while aquiring the knowledge of the effects various types of lighting has on makeup

Creative Hair Styling - Short Intensive

This short intensive Creative Hair Styling course equips the learner to develop safe and hygienic work practices while understanding the principles of creative hair styling. On completion learners will be able to demonstrate fashion hair styling to include directional roller setting, blow-drying and creative hair up-styling techniques.  Learners will also explore working with wigs, hair pieces and extensions from securing to setting in various styles.

Fashion Buying & Merchandising - Part time

In their advisory role to designers and retailers, fashion merchandisers are required to constantly keep their fingers to the pulse of one of the world's fastest moving industries. By tracking and analysing market trends it is their job to recommend to their employers the next direction to take in line with upcoming style shifts. As a fashion buyer your job will be to attend shows held in the fashion capitals of the world, forecast trends, buy the right clothes at the right time, whilst at the same time always ensuring profits and growth for the company.

Fashion Design Part time

The part time Fashion Design course introduces the principles of the fashion design process from concept to the finished product. Students will explore visual research, developing ideas into creative and innovative fashion designs.

Advanced Fashion Design Part time

The Advanced fashion design course is a follow on course for students that have completed the Fashion Design course or who have had previous experience in fashion. It is a project based course exploring deconstruction techniques, and developing design ideas by working with actual garments.

Garment Construction Part time

This Garment Construction course will allow students to gain skills in the practical element of garment assembly through knowledge of fabric, cutting and stitching.

Advanced Garment Construction - Part time

This Advanced Garment Construction course will allow students to gain advanced skills in garment construction and assembly including cutting and stitching. This class will cover advanced garment construction and finishing skills. Students will be responsible to sew a variety of samples including zippers, button holes,pockets as well as sew two garments to high finishing standards. Students will learn how to manipulate patterns and gain extensive knowledge in advanced finishing techniques. Please note, intermediate sewing skills are necessary. This is not a beginners course.

Pattern Drafting - Part time

The pattern drafting course will teach students how to draft basic bodice and skirt blocks. Students will also learn how to manipulate their patterns to a specific design model. This course will also involve sewing as students will construct their basic blocks and learn proper fitting techniques. Please note, basic sewing skills are necessary. Previous drafting experience is not necessary.

Millinery Introductory Course

This is an intensive millinery design course aimed at beginners to intermediate students. It is a thorough introduction to the process of blocking felt using traditional millinery techniques and equipment. Participants are expected to produce one hat finished to a professional standard.

Millinery Design Part time

Milliners design and create hats, they work with a wide variety of materials from straw and paper to velvets and silks. Millinery is a highly skilled craft requiring a steady hand, attention to detail and precise working. The work of the Milliner extends to other forms of fashionable head wear. The Milliner needs to have a good knowledge of fashion trends and an excellent understanding of fabrics, design and shape is also important.

Visual Retail Display Part time

Make Up Artist Full time Year 1

Make Up Artists are becoming more and more in demand in the Irish and International Entertainment and Cosmetic industries. Portobello Institute's Make Up Artistry courses combine the technical skill set required with internationally recognised rewards, to give you the opportunity to work in the many challenging aspects and the diverse world of Make Up Artists.

Portobello Make Up Artist Part time

The Portobello Make Up Artist course covers the ITEC syllabus for Facial Make Up and modules 1 and 2 of the Fashion, Theatre and Media Make Up course, omitting Special Effects. The ITEC exam is optional.

Fashion, Theatre & Media Make Up Part time

The Fashion Theatre and Media Make Up course is exclusively tailored to cover every aspect of Fashion, Theatre, TV, Film and Special Effects Make Up. The addition of the Special Effects module provides you with the ability to work in specialised areas of theatre, TV, and film.

Fantasy, Face & Body Painting 4 weeks

This advanced Make Up Artist course has been designed to meet the increasing demand from past students and trained makeup artists who wish to learn a higher standard of makeup. If you are interested in creating Theatrical and Fantasy characters for strong editorial, TV or Film then this is the make up artist course for you.

Teen Beauty & Make Up Course - 2 weeks

Do you want to learn new beauty and make up tricks that will make you look stunning everyday? Then this is the beauty & make up course for you. This fun two week make up course aimed at teens is the ideal short course for those who want to look their best for little cost and maximum impact.

Special Effects Make Up – 1 Week Course

The Special Effects Make Up course is specially designed for the already established Make Up artist looking to upskill into an alternative area of Make Up. The course will start at beginner level and run through all the products, ingredients and materials used within today’s Special FX industry. You will meet a variety of highly trained Special FX tutors who are actively working professionally within the TV and Film Industry.

Intensive 3 day Editorial & Fashion Hair

This intensive course offers training in fashion hair styling and upstyles and is the perfect add on for trained makeup artists who are looking to expand their skill set in the creative field.   Students who take this course typically have no experience in hair or may already have some experience and wish to refresh their skill base.  The 3 day course covers all skills relevant for styling hair for camera.  The course will compliment a makeup artistry qualification and will cover Catwalk and High Fashion Hair, Bridal Hair, Bridesmaids Hair, accessories - veils, tiaras & flowers.

Introduction to Hat Making - 1 Week Course

The Introduction to Hat Making course is a 1 week course that introduces the learner to the foundations required for hat making and design. You will learn to work with a wide variety of materials and shapes creating hats and head pieces. This highly skilled millinery craft requires a steady hand and attention to detail. You will explore a wide range of media and materials and experiment with these to produce a variety of hat designs. Learners should have a good knowledge of fashion trends and an excellent understanding of fabrics, design and shape.

Personal Make up Course - 6 Evenings

Do you want to learn more about make up and all the tips and tricks to look fabulous every day? The Personal Make Up course is aimed at those who want to master professional make up application for personal use. You will learn how to choose and apply the right shade of foundation, how to make the most of your features and how to blend and accentuate cheek bones just like the professionals. Interior Design Part time

Portobello Institute's Interior Design course has been designed with the help of professional interior designers and architects and focusses on Residential Interior Design.

The interior design course will provide you with a solid understanding of all the key features of interior design - colour mixing, texture, 3D effects, materials, lighting, space planning, drafting and includes a portfolio presentation using the work you complete during the course year.
