Portobello Institute have been approved by Pobal as a Training Provider to deliver accredited training as part of the Learner Fund.  The Learner Fund will subsidise the cost for eligible learners to undertake accredited Level 5 and Level 6 courses. By September 2015 all staff will be required to have Level 5 and all (ECCE) room leaders will be required to have Level 6 in Childcare.

This course is aimed at those who wish to attain a recognised qualification and embark on a professional career in an early childhood care and education setting. Eight modules lead to a Common Award, ECCE Level 5. 

This is an ideal introductory course for those interested in a career in Early Childhood Care and Education. This programme will be offered through a blended learning approach.  The flexibility of this course means you can study at your own pace. Our experienced tutors are available through a range of contact modes to offer support and guidance. On completion of the below eight modules learners will be awarded with a QQI Level 5 Common Award in Early Childhood Care and Education.

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

Class Sizes

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello.  To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Many of our students tell us of the lifelong friendships they have made during their study time with Portobello.

Course Structure

This is a part-time course delivered one evening a week as per dates set out. Communications and Work experience modules are completed by blended learning and participants must attend 2 Saturdays to complete these modules. Workshops are held in Portobello Institute, Dublin 1. Access, Transfer and Progression

Graduates may work in a range of Early Years settings. Learners may choose to progress towards a major award in Early Childhood Care and Education, QQI Level 6. Further progression: Level 8 Honours degree in Early Childhood Studies

Protection for Learners

QQI have introduced a mandatory insurance protection policy fee that must be paid by students enrolled on all courses with a duration of 12 weeks or over. This insurance cost is in addition to your course fees.
