Certified Energy Manager (CEM)

Since it's inception in 1981, the Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) credential has become widely accepted and used as a measure of professional accomplishment within the energy management field. The Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) Qualification is awarded by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), a nonprofit making professional society of 15.000 members in 84 countries with their head quarters in the USA.

When you have earned the right to put the initials CEM® behind your name, you have distinguished yourself amongst energy management professionals. The designation CEM® recognises individuals who have demonstrated high levels of experience, competence, proficiency and ethical fitness in the energy management profession.

Qualifications gained

  • The CEM® qualification is awarded by the Association of Energy Engineers®, based in the USA, with chapters in 84 countries worldwide.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. The prerequisites to qualify for the certification process have been designed to take into account the possible diversity of education and practical experience an individual may have. However, each CEM candidate must meet one of the following criteria.

  1. 4 year degree in engineering or architecture OR Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) AND 3+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management.
  2. 4 year degree in environmental science, physics or earth science AND 4+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management.
  3. 4 year degree in business (or related field) AND 5+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management.
  4. 2 year energy management associate's degree AND 6+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management.
  5. 2 year technical associate's degree (Level 6 FETAC in engineering discipline) AND 8+ years or experience in energy engineering or energy management.
  6. 10+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management.

Candidates must also submit a current CV upon application to this course.

Course structure

This programme is a total of 6 full days. It is divided up as 3 days in Jan/Feb (Jan 31st, Feb 1st and Feb 2nd) and 3 days in Feb (Feb 16th, 17th and 18th)

The course and exam will be presented in SI units and will fully reference European and Irish Energy Policy. The course is presented in a lecture and discussion format. Where an individual meets the pre-qualification, experience and required examination mark, the CEM® qualification will be awarded by the Association of Energy Engineers.
