Private Members Bill SNA posts debate Tues 30th & Weds 31st March 10

Brian Hayes T.D. (Fine Gael) is introducing a Private Members Bill in the Dail this week. The Bill will be debated today, Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st evenings with a vote to be taken on Wednesday.

Its aim is to stop the review of the SNA posts and to appeal decisions that have been made already. It also aims to ensure that the ESPEN Act 2004 is fully implemented.

UN International Day of Persons with disabilities 3rd Dec 09

The full time Special Needs Education students did a fantastic job of promoting the day of persons with disabilities. They carried out four disability awareness sessions with other students in the college on a variety of courses. Everyone joined in brilliantly and contributed extremely well. There were a number of posters made and displayed around the college, a large number made by the FT Montessori Special Needs group. My congratulations to them all for making it a highly successful event. Watch out for future events.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

You are invited to join in observing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 3 December 2009
Theme: “Making the MDGs Inclusive: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world”

We are promoting awareness around the college and the full time students are going into classes to do disability awareness. What are you going to do? The UN web site are looking for people to send in their activities for the day check it out… make a difference. ‘We will showcase the idea on our website to inform and inspire others to do the same. Please send your ideas to enable@un.org.’

Batt O’Keefe endorses inclusive education

Salamanca 15 years on - Inclusion for all conference Malahide, Dublin. Five full time students and the Course Director attended this historical event. There were over 300 delegates from across Europe and other countries. Batt O’Keefe was part of the opening speeches and he made clear his support for inclusive education. He didn’t mention how he was going to financially support it – surprise. The students experienced a fantastic two days of presentations, workshops and debates. It is clear Ireland has made great progress in the last 15 years but it was also stated that there is still a way to go. The main theme from the conference was ‘the question is no longer do we accept inclusion, but rather, how do we achieve it’. I am recharged and enthused by the positivity and great progress made. We were all part of the consolation of New Dublin Salamanca Manifesto, which is promised to be launched on 3rd December 09 UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Donna Williams a dynamic speaker

Donna not only kept the audience intrigued with her presence (standing on the coffee table), making strange noises (reminisent from her past), singing her Broken Biscuit song (the one that always tastes the best), but with the personal and professional insight into autism. The audience was challenged with some controversal views, cheeky digs and thought provoking questions. What ever people’s views of Donna were I’m certain she left an impact. I have always been fascinated by her colourful life which continues to florish in all directions, now to include a one woman rock musical, which she plans to tour with . Watch this space for more exciting events.

Autism spectrum conditions can effect the way people use their bodies, how
they see, hear, physically experience their world. They can effect the way people make sense of and communicate information, how they work with their own emotions and other people, how their motivations and fears will be expressed.
These may present a broad range of challenging behaviours not just for the family, school, community and workplace, but most centrally, for the person themselves.
Donna Williams is a person diagnosed with Autism, a Sociologist and qualified teacher and the author of nine published books including Autism; An Inside Out Approach and her international best-selling autobiography, Nobody Nowhere. Donna is an internationally renowned public speaker, a consultant, as well as a sculptor, painter, singer-songwriter with the band, Donna and The Aspinauts, and screenwriter of the upcoming film, Nobody Nowhere.
