Another graduate lands her dream job

Fashion Buying and Merchandising graduate Dandelion Sergeant has just been appointed as consultant and stylist for the new Biba Boutique in House of Fraser. Dandelion will play a strategic part in launching the infamous brand in Ireland from styling photos shoots, merchandising the boutique and sales consultant to the customers.

The legendry sixtes label has been revamped and restyled yet still pays homage to its heritage with leopard print faux fur coats and printed maxi dresses. The label was a big back back in the 60’s with icon’s and fashionistas of their time Marianne Faithfull, Twiggy and Bianca Jagger and is sure to make a impact in the Irish market.

Girl about Town Daisy Lowe fronts the campaign and is an lover of the brand having many original Biba pieces in her wardrobe passed down from her mum Pearl Lowe.

A career change that paid off

Returning to study is turning out to be the best decision that Tracey Conlon made. After studying Make-up artistry at Portobello she set up as a freelance Make-up artist and is successfully building a reputaion for herself within the industry working on various editorial shoots and events.

Tracey says ‘I’ve always had a love for make-up, and through my research I found that the Make-up artistry course at Portobello Institute was the one for me. I studied part-time but my tutor val was always there to answer any questions I had outside of college hours. Since finishing my course I’ve done various photoshoots to build up my portfolio and one of my recent photoshoots is soon to appear in a Sunday magazine. I’ve also been hired to do weddings and debs and my website is near completion. All of the above I never deemed possible as I was in my late thirties returning to college but I got so much positive feedback and encouragement along the way. Now fully trained I feel confident in my career choice and I am delighted that I chose Portobello Institute.”

Re-dress give a guest lecture to the Fashion Buying and Merchandising students

Kellie Dalton from Re-dress, the Irish Ethical Fashion Organization visited the college today to speak to the fashion students about event production and Ethical Fashion Week. Re-dress are the one stop shop for the promotion of sustainable fashion and encourage ethical practice where possible. Big names in fashion are key supporters from Designer Katharine Hamnett through to high street favourite American Apparel who are currently aiming to increase an environmentally friendly way to shopping by offering its customers the opportunity to recycle unwanted clothes.

Fashion buyng and merchanding students from Portobello Institute will be immersed into the fast paced world of fashion this weekend as they help out at the ‘Ultimate Girls Day Out’. This fashion extravaganza hosted by fashion mags Irish Tatler and U mag is a must for all fashionistas with fashion shows, styling tips from the experts and beauty treatments all happening over the two days. Working back stage at the fashion shows is a fantastic experience for the students giving them a real insight into show production and management. Photos to follow next week.
