Barnardos launch a new publication
Barnardos launched a new publcation this week to support those working in pre-schools in creches, Montessori schools, after school clubs and summer camp settings. The book acts as a guide for careers to understand their responsibilites regarding child protection and to maximise the safety and welfare of the children while in their care and to report child protection concerns in accordance with the Government's protection guidelines Chilldren First.
Barnardos reported that following research in the UK children are most at risk from child abuse in their pre-school years (0-4), therefore it is extremly vital that staff within childcare facilities are aware of their responsiblities and guidelines are put into practice for the protection of children. They stated that in 2010 97% of pre-school children in Ireland avaiiled of the new ECCE governement pre-school scheme. Teachers and prime careers are in a unique position to identify and report and act upon any suspected abuse of children in their care.
The new guide which is informed by Irish and International research includes material on how to recognise child abuse and how to report concerns to the HSE. It should work hand in hand with the Children First guidelines ensuring best practice and knowledge for those working within childcare.
Denise Flood, Montessoiri Course Director for Portobello Institute attended the book launch and believes the guide will act as an essential informative manual for her students. While studying Montessori Teaching the students undertake work experience in schools nationwide and should be educated wtihin this sector, ensuring they can detect any form of abuse should it arise.
Protecting Children is available to purchase from Barnardos for E25.
