Celebrating International Women’s Day today, it is important for us to acknowledge our inspirational leaders, with Portobello Institute being built on the shoulders on some exceptional women.  The college was founded in 1981 as Portobello School by Delia Lyons with just few childcare students in place. Delia understood the importance of education and had a philosophy towards “the individual care and attention to personal growth and development of each student combined with the delivery of top standards of international training”. Delia nurtured her students up to graduation and celebrated the occasion alongside them with afternoon tea in the Shelbourne hotel.

Over the years as the business developed, a move to larger premises was apparent and Portobello School re-located to their new location in Dublin 1. Housed in two Georgian buildings in the bustling city centre, the college grew from one year certificate and diploma courses in childcare to multiple disciplines across Business, Travel, Sport, Early Years, Fashion, Makeup, Beauty and Health. In recent years the college now offer degrees in Sport and Early Years.

Delia’s daughter Rebekah Lyons has followed by sheer example in her mother’s footsteps growing the college from a few students to over 2,000 today. Over the last 25 years Rebekah has been extremely forward thinking in her approach towards education growing the business while understanding the importance of her mother’s morals.

Core values created by Delia in 1981 still remain in place today and have always been prominent to the overall ethos of Portobello Institute. A personal approach towards students remains central to our education. Delia treated her students like family ensuring they received the best education with the greatest support and our ethos comes from this inspiration and is a hallmark of the approach to all our students.

There is a strong and shared ethos of personal and personalised care for the students who come to study here and this is part of the DNA make-up of the Institute. Every student is personally known by their name and their ambitions; and their dreams are understood and valued. Portobello Institute prides itself on being a strong college choice where people can flourish and reach their potential.
