From a very young age Elaine was largely influenced by her mum’s keen interest in and love of fashion. Together with her own early retail experience working in Brown Thomas, it was the beginning of her love for fashion.

“I chose the fashion buying course at Portobello Institute as I knew it was a reputable college and that tutors are best in class with many years experience in the fashion industry themselves.”

Elaine admits that she enjoyed all elements of the course but in particular loved learning about trend forecasting and ultimately planning a range. Learning about the garment industry and indeed retail operations has definitely allowed for a better understanding of how buying for a fast-fashion retailer works.

“My tutor Anne Marie’s abundant knowledge of the fashion industry along with a wealth of experience made for a killer combination in class.” “Being able to apply the practical knowledge taught in class was a huge advantage.“

“Thanks to the continuous support and guidance from Anne Marie during my time at Portobello Institute meant I could interview armed with the best tips and advice in the business, ultimately leading to my dream job as a trainee fashion buyer in a fast fashion, multi-national company, Penney’s (Primark). Without Anne Marie’s constant help and support Elaine felt her dream would not have been possible.

“My long term goal is to become an established senior buyer or possibly to get into retail consultancy, but for now I want to learn as much as I possibly can.”

Elaine feels she is really lucky to have secured a job in Dublin as many have to travel to abroad to find roles in fashion buying. “I am happy where I am at the moment as there is plenty of opportunity for me to progress; it is just up to me to make that happen.”     Elaine said she would absolutely recommend the fashion buying course at Portobello Institute. “It’s the perfect opportunity to learn from the best and also to meet like-minded people.”

Elaine’s advice for new learners is to look for a college with good tutors and also to ensure that that the college can meet your needs, whether it’s a flexible payment plan or part time study. She felt that Portobello Institute can offer all of this.

The fashion industry in Ireland is indeed small but it’s a great way to start building relationships and opportunities are here.
