Muscular Dystrophy Ireland is a charity doing tremendous work in Ireland.  Founded in 1972  MDI offers support and information to those who have muscular dystrophy and other related neuromuscular conditions.  Their main aim is to encourage independent living and housed at their main campus is a 4 bed luxury apartment.  This facility is available for short term let and provides independent living to the highest spec.  Our Occupational Therapy students were fortunate to visit Muscular Dystrophy Ireland for a tour of their Home from Home apartment.  The 4 bed apartment is completely wheelchair friendly and comes equipped with all the mod cons.  Particular attention is paid to the kitchen which is fitted with adjustable worktops which can suit people of different abilities.  Electric height adjustable beds are in the bedroom while the bathroom has a shower chair and a ceiling hoist.  The facilitator at MDI was extremely impressed with our students who were very interested to hear about the facilities the apartment offers and also the all the other work the charity carries out.  This visit gives our students a real insight into independent living for those with a disability and how their role as an occupational therapist would play in this.
