A guide to Studying Sports Science: A Degree

Sport Science is a relatively new academic discipline, but one that should be taken extremely seriously. In Ireland, sport supports 40,000 jobs and as a nation we spend more than €2 billion on sport-related activity every year.

Sports science is an extremely broad subject which is multidisciplinary. It includes the study of a number of science subjects with physiology and anatomy to measure what is happening in a body. It also includes psychology to understand the role of the mind during performance and nutrition for athletes. Business and sports management play a role to understand the operational sides of the sports industry.

A keen focus is on all core scientific subjects and how these are applied in a sporting context. Multiple transferrable skills including communication, creativity, dedication & self discipline are also gained.

A degree in Sports Science & Physical Education prepares students for careers in multiple settings within the sports sector. Sports Science graduates can become coaches, psychologists, personal trainers, or progress their study to become P.E teachers.
