Education has never been more accessible with blended learning becoming a hugely popular option among adults. We now live in a digital age and the ways in which we learn are constantly changing. Blended learning has been described as studying the best of both worlds, involving both a classroom and online environment. The overall aim of this learning type is to enhance the learning and teaching experiences for students and teachers alike. Essentially, it gives students the freedom to learn independently from their tutor and allows them to monitor students’ progress more closely than possibly through traditional methods. In response to the needs of the modern learner, Portobello Institute are now offering the BA Level 7 in Early Childhood Studies through blended learning.

So what is blended learning?

Blended Learning involves multiple teaching methods for the purpose of flexible enriched learning. It combines the flexibility of e-learning with the opportunity to personally interact with tutors and peers in a traditional classroom setting. Students benefit from studying information online from the comfort of their own home while enjoying engagement with peers and tutor in a classroom setting.

Why do students choose this study option?

More flexibility for students
A varied approach to learning
Ideal for the independent learner
Better means of monitoring progress
It combines the greatest strengths of online and face-to-face education
It is designed so that both methods reinforce and complement each other
Students learn great life skills such as self-discipline, self-motivation, and organisational behaviours

The Portobello Institute Approach to Blended Learning

Our blended learning course for the BA Level 7 brings greater diversity to learning and allows for a seamless and complementary flow of learning for every learner.  Our approach to learning includes a mixture of workshops together with online learning and group discussions. We fully understand the requirement for support at degree level so we ensure every student has access to a tutor.

We aim to maximise flexible study where students can work independently online. For those who feel they may not be self-directed and disciplined for this type of study we ensure tutor support for the full duration of the blended one year programme.  This blended learning course is aimed at those who already hold the ECCE full major award and are looking for further their qualification in Early Childhood Studies.  Holders of the BA Level 7 ordinary degree in Early Childhood Studies award will be eligible to gain the higher capitation grant from the DCYA (Dept. of Children and Youth Studies) for their role in an early childhood centre.

What our students think

We are delighted to share some feedback from our current blended learning students -

• The course allows you to work in confidence while studying. The course flexibility is very well suited to the early years sector
• All assessments are assignment based so no exams to be mindful of
• Personal attention and support is vital at degree level and this is fundamental to the ethos at Portobello Institute

Next course intake

We are currently enrolling for our next intake of learners who will commence their studies in October and study until August 2019. We are delighted to advise that the workshops will take place in a number of location venues, making education more accessible for our students. Centres for learning include Dublin, Cork, Gort, Roscommon, Thurles, Navan Carlow.
