At Portobello Institute, our class sizes differ per department but the majority of our classes have an impressively low student-teacher ratio. As a general rule we cap all of our part-time classes at a maximum of 14 students.

Classroom size can directly impact student performance but there is no perfect answer when it comes to what the lesser number should be.

We have included some of the reasons for our decision of 14 -

Every student gets noticed - less numbers mean every student gets the attention they deserve from the tutor.  There is a much greater opportunity to ask questions and to participate in discussion.

Support– sometimes it’s important to get that extra bit of support and importantly to know it’s available to you. Students can receive the undivided attention from their tutor in a small group.

Enhanced learning – Students become more comfortable in their environment sooner which can lead to faster and enhanced learning.

Tutor interaction – teachers have more opportunity to speak to the class as a whole and to the students individually which is important. With fewer students tutors can gain a much deeper understanding of capabilities, knowing students individually and in turn resulting in quality recommendations in the future.

Peers become friends – students can quickly become more comfortable in a smaller class setting with friendships among peers developing quicker.
